I'm at the point where I just want to part my 1998 out and never look back.
They want $1500 plus for engines in your area. Wow.

Brillo 76, how much do junkyards charge for engines in your area?

Varies. What's was going on the yards cleaned up. When metal was up they destroyed a pile of them. Several yards got rid of the 3rd gens.

One pick and pull around here is crazy. We never know what the prices are so we stay away from then.

By my one buddy's house they crushed then all.

So I am starting to look around to see if any are around. We do have a few full service garages around here but most of those have nothing.

One is $300 as an example. Mostly not horrible. That would be a pick and pull

It's hard to find a running 4x4 SUV for $1500, so I would fix it 10 out of 10 times. Pumping another grand or so into mine as it's transmission time now but sure beats buying another vehicle.

Oh the prices for the 3rd gens went up around here. I used to really get the rotted frame complete trucks reasonable.

Yes. I just pumped 4k into the shitbox but that was total including purchase of the rig.

After they tried to kill the world prices really climbed. So I can't buy the complete trucks for what I used to. Oh well.

Just wanted to chime in and say I've noticed the same thing in my area. Ive been looking for lift parts, so have been going to a lot of yards lately. I'm in south-east Texas and many of the yard in my area don't have any. I see a billion 3rd gens driving around, but very few at the pick a parts.

Not sure if that's a good or bad thing haha.

I haven’t gone junking in about two years but if a yard had a 3gen it was always a 96 or 97 with the lower control arm mount on the drivers side. In my years of junking while owning a 3rd Gen I only remember seeing three of them.

Till I discovered them not much was left.

Yup, seems pretty common here too.

Each yard I've been to maybe has one or two.

I once picked up running 2002 2WD 4Runner for $600. Those days are long gone.

Thoughts on market for T4R before or after replacing engine

Hey all, I am reviving old thread as I just registered so I don't have permission to create new threads yet.

I have a 2001 T4R Limited with almost 300K miles. I don't know the details yet, but I believe the engine has just suffered a catastrophic failure, so let's assume for this discussion we are looking at an engine replacement scenario.

I could have the engine replaced and keep (or sell I suppose) the vehicle, but I wonder if there are people who want to do engine swaps/upgrades anyway-- and would prefer to do it on their own terms. For example, their choice of engine, their choice of how much of the work they want to do etc.

This thought has me wondering, if the market for old 4Runners would be heavy on people wanting to do engine swaps anyway, perhaps it would be foolish of me to have the engine replaced myself (unless I were determined to keep it, which may be an option).

I am interested in your thoughts on this dilemma. Thanks.

My $.02. I bought an 00' blown engine with cracked heads. Never pulled an engine in my life but I watched @mtbtim 's YouTube vid and swapped it in about 2 weeks doing the work as I had free time. Cost about ~$500 in tools (shop hoist ect) + $1400 for a used engine. As far as swaps, yes they are out there but I don't see that being overly common yet on these though I'm sure it will become more common as the years go on. I'd throw in a new motor and get another 100-200k out of it or sell it.

Thanks for your insights. I am realizing I am in the wrong stage of life to work on this myself. The poor thing has just been sitting there all this time and I've been busy elsewhere. Looks like I need to get this to someone who can do something with it.

Anyone out there looking for an inexpensive project car? I am in western Washington state, and need to rehome my old friend (2001 Limited T4R).

Putting a $5K motor with [I'm guessing] $3K labor is still way cheaper than buying a used good condition 4Runner.

I'm happy to know the video series @infamousRNR and I created helped you with your engine swap.

For those that have never seen this series, here's Part 1.
