Late night junk food run last night revealed a burnt-out climate control bulb. A little searching, and the single bulb is easy to replace by pulling the front of the climate control, removing the plastic lens (don’t break the retaining tab), and pulling out the burnt bulb. The green cap is reusable if you peel it back gently inside out, then replace it by rolling it down on the new bulb.

For the next person, the bulb for a 1997 4Runner with the manual climate control is a 2721 at Autozone. You can try the 74, but it looks too big. The 2721 fits both the cap and socket perfectly. Fixed this in the parking lot this am and was on my way.

The reason I ask is because apparently there is a 15" version of the split 3 spoke

I have the 16" split 3 spoke with a TBU, it fits no problem

Frank

Some good progress this weekend, even if it didn’t fix my shimmy at speed it was time to retire the ITREs. This was a simple job with the right tool rented from O’Reilly.

It was also time to get after the oil change and swapping out all the gear oil. Whoever designed the oil filter placement for this engine should be fired… directly under of the exhaust manifold and in front of the downpipe, both of which were stupid hot.

I did get it aligned, even though I have LCA bushes and new cams / bolts set to arrive from Partsouq next week. Thankfully it’s one of those lifetime alignment deals, taking full advantage of that!

Gear oil change, Valvoline 75w90 in everything except the trans, which got Redline MT-90.

I used the 4x4 bearing press that the auto parts stores loan out to install and a bottle jack & propane torch to remove. Easy

Yeah, I was thinking the same but found the press locally and have a few other jobs for it, or I’ll just sell along for most of what I paid. Seller did a front-end job on his Honda and included a bearing press kit, ball joint press (the big C-clamp), and a set of SAE and metric taps / dies in the sale.

Thing is a beast though. Can’t wait to put some things in it and see how they blow up

I have a 5 spd 3rz 4x4 as well. The best way to change the oil filter is to start unscrewing it by hand, then put a bag over it and unscrew it the last little bit. The filter and oil will drop into the bag instead of making a mess on the steering components.

All bulb types that you might need to replace are in the owners manual btw. Things like the ash tray light and the glove box light use the same bulb

So much this. I figured this out as I had hot oil dribbling down my arm… of course whoever last did the oil change had gorilla’d the filter on, requiring a strap wrench and plenty of swear words

Here we go - lots of progress this weekend. Starting with the front and rear bumpers. I picked up the rear bumper from the junkyard a few weeks back and installed today.
Frank-img_3709-jpg

Pulled and painted the front bumper as well, cool dark gray color matched with one of the rear corner caps. This has 3 coats of paint and 2 coats of 1K clear, but I ran out just before I got through the 2nd coat. Letting this cure for 2 days and then will wet sand, hoping it works but if not will pick up another can of 1K clear and give it another coat.
Frank-img_3708-jpg

Next up is all of the lower control arm bushes. These weren’t that hard, had the 20 ton press to assist. Lots of banging as the bushings released from their housings. I did heat them up a bit, but ended up not really needing to… 20 tons of pressure is plenty to get them to come loose. Here’s the box of parts that I ended up pulling, all 4 bushings, cams, and bolts.

Frank-img_3704-jpg

Here’s the rear driver control bushing - I’m not putting a lot of pressure on this, and you can see the cracks in the rubber. This was repeated on the passenger side.

Frank-img_3691-jpg

I ended up finding that the rear cam on the passenger side was cranked all the way inboard. I fixed that to match up to the driver’s side, which seemed a little more reasonable, and then took it down for another alignment this morning. Caster and camber were spot on, toe was way off so he adjusted that.

Shimmy is still there intermittently, which is really frustrating after all of the suspension bits that I’ve replaced. The only thing left is to replace the sh*tty tires, which is happening next week. BFG A/Ts are on the way. If that doesn’t fix it… I’m guessing I’ll just have to live with it. Or throw more money at the UCA bushes, may just do that anyway for the heck of it.

Shimmy turned out to be a slightly loose steering rack tensioner.

Glad that’s sorted, but this will be up for sale this weekend if anyone is in the LA area and interested. I’ll post the CL ad once it’s up.
