It's a single post connection on the back side of the engine near the firewall. I think you can best access it from the driver side. If you feel back there, you will find the harness plug connector and the single blade post it slides over. The temperature sending unit for the gauge is screwed into the intake manifold. It's common to accidentally pull the connection off when manipulating the wiring harness so you can get the valve covers out and back in.
The same thing happened to me when I did the job on my 98 4runner. I was able to reach hack there without disassembling anything on the engine to get it reconnected. If you can't feel it, you might be able to view what you're looking for with a telescoping mirror with a light.
