engines not getting fuel?

after a nice sunday drive i couldn't get the runner to start up again. the engine will turn over but it wont fire up. i spray some starting fluid into the intake and it fired up and ran until the starting fluid burned up then died.
i dont want to start taking things apart if this is a common issue thats easily remedied. the EFI relay has the correct numbers as defined in the toyota mechanics manual.
im glad i didnt get stranded on the peak we cruised to.

How many miles on your fuel pump? When it starts up on starting fluid does the rpm gauge work?

yes, while its running on starter fluid the rpm go up and shows the rpms until its out of fumes. im curious what that tells you. i still havent dropped the gas tank to check the pump yet. i removed the fuel filter and cranked the engine but its not blasting out of the line. it dribbles out mostly.

That should tell you that your fuel pump isn't working right. You most likely need a new fuel pump.

Yes it the fuel pump or a completely clogged filter or a fuel pump circuit issue.
The ecu needs the rpm signal to turn on the fuel pump relay. This is why i asked if you are seeing rpm movement. IF so, the signal is there for the fuel pump ecu to enable the fuel pump.

So its either the pump or extremely bad fuel. Howsoever, how you explained the event. I would be expecting the fuel pump failed. Along with the fuel filter removed and the pump isn't pushing the fuel..

You pretty much narrowed it down to the pump. Or no power to the pump which is very easy to test using the factory service manual. :-)

fuel pump!!! i bought the assembly from rockauto and tried to put it in. i had however dented in the fuel tank. That's why the old one died out. i had to bang out the dent with a dead blow hammer and a fiberglass handled sledge. then i was able to install the new assembly. im back to wheeling. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE FEEDBACK AND THOUGHTS.
