Steering rack in the UK?

Hi guys,

Looking at replacing my steering rack and they're a bit hard to come by in the UK for a 25 year old LHD truck (country has a few Japan imported diesel RHD Hilux Surf, but that's it).

Found in some other topick the assembly code would be 44250-35042, still difficult to find here (first page on Google gives me Japanese exports at more than 1200 USD and a couple US exports at 1000 USD with shipping)...

Was wondering if that steering rack (or compatible) might have been used on other trucks sold in Europe at the time (for LHD), so I could do a search based on these models rather than the assembly code. 4Runner searches in the region mainly returns 2nd gen stuff...

Thanks!

Amayama only have that part number down for the 4Runner and Tacoma, Buy Genuine Toyota 4425035042 (44250-35042) Gear Assy, Power Steering (For Rack & Pinion). Prices, fast shipping, weight - Amayama

You could try getting a price from a Toyota dealer. I've done that in the past for Surf spares, before discovering Amayama.

Thanks! No availability at Partsouq (and 1100 USD before shipping if they had), 1100 USD with shipping at Amayama

Almost looks like the best would be to find a dealer in the US who'd be willing to ship the part...

Diesel? How dare you

Does the 3rd gen share a platform with anything else like the 4th gen does with the FJ Cruiser?

Find JoeJoe on Facebook in the Toyota Groups. He might be able to help you out. Shipping is going to be a killer though.

You might also check with Toyota dealers in Canada as the shipping and tariffs/taxes might be different.

3rd gens weren't sold in the UK, they switched over to the Prado after the 2nd gen (same in Australia).

Did you try looking for a steering rack for a Tacoma of the same time period? You might get some more results, assuming they are interchangeable. Insult to injury you will probably have VAT too.

I'll have a look at FB and Tacomas, hopefully some better luck there.

Weirdly, this website in the UK lists a (RHD) steering rack for the VZN185 as compatible with the Cruiser 90, first time I've seen that (at that price it's probably not OEM anyways but if verified that'd be nice, Cruiser are much more common in Europe)

NEW Power Steering Rack

Another weird thing? Tacoma steering rack is listed as 44250-35020 (different part code), yet 4Runner steering rack (wherever i saw them) are listed as compatible with the same era Tacoma.

Wondering if it's a both ways compatibility, also if it requires any extra work to adapt between both (or any other caveat)? And if all the same... why would they have different part codes?

Has anyone done a swap one way or the other here?

edit: saw a forum post from 2013 where someone tried and "pressure and return hoses are swapped..."

Out of curiosity, why do you need to replace the rack?

Prado 90, 96-2002 Hilux Surf and 3rd gen 4runner has the same frame, suspension etc., so I believe the prado 90 rack will fit your surf.

Rebuilding a steering rack is not too bad (kits are available from toyota)

It is busted :-D

One boot (at least) is leaking, also replaced some grommet a couple years ago but didn't really do wonders... it needs a large overhaul, fixing it would probably cost even more than the mad prices i see for a replacement.

Good to know, would you know the part number or reference for both these things by any chance?

The Prado LHD rack seems a bit hard to find here, could be worth having a look in Europe (first things I could find are no-brand for 500 USD...)

What makes you think that? You can buy rebuild kits for like $100 USD
