Would you buy this 3rd Gen?

Hey guys. I’m helping my nephew find a 3rd Gen and came across this one. I was wondering what you guys thought about the rust? He sent me pictures of before and after he sanded it down and repainted. Let me know what you guys think? Thanks!

I mean it's definitely still in a salvageable state and it looks like he did a pretty good job, BUT time will tell how good of a job he really did. Next spring/summer take a peek around and look for any flaking, bubbling, etc. That should give you an idea of how well it was addressed. But given that's not really possible here, I would keep looking around and see if you can catch something a little cleaner. That's just me though

I would not, but I am already dealing with my own rust bucket 4Runner. Speaking from experience, I would say you have to get underneath it and test whether or not you can stick your finger through any part of the frame. Also, be prepared for bolts snapping off on a regular basis if you work on it yourselves.

Hopefully he used a rust converter on it before top coating it. Otherwise you aren't really doing much besides cosmetically covering it until it reappears.

I'm sure the northern folks here will agree, but that'll start peeling off within a couple years. He didn't treat the rust even though he removed a lot of it so it will still rust underneath that undercoating.

And since it is rubberized, it will hold together until there is plenty of rust underneath...

I'd expect you can find much lower rust examples in Florida (assuming they didn't use it on the beach all the time).

I agree on all points. Florida vehicles are usually rust free. When you see rusty ones down here, its usually because they cam from up north. Ugh! Its a shame because the rest of it is nice. Thanks guys. The search continues.....
