5.71 gearing? When did that start?

So I’m browsing the gear websites, mulling over the possibilities on the next steps….. and low and behold, there’s. 5.71 option? Have I just been under a rock? I was under the impression 5.29 w as the max ratio for Toyota available?

Anyone done this by chance?

I've known about them since around 2010. The problem with them in the rock crawling community is the pinion is the weakest link and has a tendency to snap/shear.

Right, the pinion gear has to get way smaller to accommodate that ratio. But it still seems common enough to hear about folks using it.

5.71s have been around for decades....but are harder and harder to find since they have a poor reputation for longevity. I wanted to potentially run 40s on my Runner....but with 5.29s and the 3.4L....37s are probably about as big as I can go for streetability.

Yeah I have seen them too in a few brands. But the major reliable brands like Yukon, Motive and others don't make them for the reasons mentioned above. More teeth on the gears equals thinner teeth and less strength. I am honestly wondering how my 5.29's are going to work out as I'm having them installed this week. Will ask the shop about best oils and stuff to run so they hold up as good as can be with roughly 350 ft lbs of torque being applied to them by the motor.

you will be fine with 5.29s. My friend Adam runs 5.29s with Chromo axleshafts on his 2nd Gen 4Runner crawler with 40 inch Red Label Tires. It's double locked, twin cased. He breaks one every few years, but he attributes that typically to being an idiot and sending it too hard.
