Dobinsons coils

Hey all, I know suspension is a dead horse at this point, but I’d love to get some opinions of those with experience regarding my two options.

I’m currently running Bilstein 5100s and OME 880/906 with 265/75/16s. I love the combo.

Soon I’m moving to 285/75/16s and adding a 1” body lift and armor (front bumper with winch, sliders, full skids, rear bumper with swingout) but would like to keep a relatively low center of gravity and try to maximize the IFS down and up travel.

I’m happy with my current ride height, but I’m assuming I will need new coils to handle the added weight.

Question 1: is my assumption correct that 880/906 won’t handle the added weight?

Question 2: which coils will be best for my application?

Option 1:

- 1” body lift
- Bilstein 5100 front (lowest perch?)
- Dobinsons C59-134 front coils (2” lift for 110lbs load)
- Bilstein 5100 rear
- Dobinsons C59-137V rear coils (2” lift for variable rate heavy load 220lbs+)
- OME 10mm trim packers in rear because I like some rake

Option 1 yields:

FRONT: 2” susp + 1” BL = 3” total
REAR: 2” susp + 0.394” (10mm) trim packer + 1” BL = 3.394” total

Option 2:

- 1” body lift
- Bilstein 5100 front (second lowest perch?)
- OME 883
- Bilstein 5100 rear
- OME 891

Option 2 yields:

FRONT: 2.5” susp + 1” BL = 3.5” total
REAR: 3” susp + 1” BL = 4” total

Thought on these two options? Are there other coil options I’m missing? With these handle the weight? Overkill?

I already have SPC UCAs, cam eliminator plates, and extended travel CVs.

Thank you everyone!!!

Any particular reason you don't have dobinson shocks listed with the dobinson coils?

Only because I already have Bilstein 5100s and would like to avoid buying new shocks at the moment.

I’ve seen a few shops offer Bilstein 5100s with Dobinsons coils as a package, so I think they should work together.

I’m super interested in Dobinsons and have heard nothing but great things. I’ve also heard that the 891’s are the springs you’d want for a heavier load.

But I’ll throw this curveball into the mix. Why not LC80 springs for the rear? I’ve got the Sonoran Steel classic 1.2 system and when I bought it (2014) it seemed to be the best bang for your buck. I’m no suspension guru, but is this simply not the case anymore? If it is, it could be a viable alternative for you. I’ve had great results but I don’t have armor/bumpers either.

I'm running the Dobinsons 137v with 5100's.

The ride quality is awesome, they flex very well, and are comfortable. I have no complaints at all.

The initial lift was more than 2 inches, but not by much. I posted center of hub to bottom of fender measurements somewhere on here after the install.

Since then I've added, sliders, a drawer system, and about 40 lbs of miscellaneous tools and EDC stuff. This lowered the rear height by about 1/2" to 3/4". I'm adding trim packers soon, just waiting on a not so hot day.

With all that said, I would look into the C59-297v. Same lift height but rated for 330lbs. I think that coil will do very well with your plans.

I'll probably eventually go with that coil as I add more weight. I like rake. As it sits now it's level without the trim packers. But during the winter and early spring my load is heavy with hunting/camping gear. So I won't know until a few months how well the 137v will handle a full load out.

1” body lift
Durobumps 5.25” bump stops
eimkieth PCK
Extended brake lines
2nd gen 4Runner rear sway bar links in front
3rd gen 4Runner front sway bar links in rear

Bilstein 5100s in front on lowest perch
OME 883 coils

Stock 1995 Land Cruiser rear shocks
OME 891 coils

I definitely think this is gonna turn out to be sexy. This sounds like a solid personalized setup. Can’t wait for pictures.

If you don’t have a company for the body lift, I’d definitely recommend Fat Pat’s Custom body lifts. I have the 1” from them and it’s a good product. Discovered them on here, I’m pretty sure. Also, Wheeler’s Off-Road makes awesome extended brake lines. I’ve got them in the front and rear from them and they’re excellent.

if you'll be carrying significant weight in the back in addition to the rear bumper, the LC80 coils will sag, so you may need air bags.

I’m going with OME 891 coils with LC80 Shocks. The 891s should do OK with the weight I’ll have. I’ll have a swingout bumper but otherwise I pack pretty light.

EDIT: I somehow forgot I frequently carry one or two mountain bikes off the back. We’ll see how the 891s hold up..
