Summary
Front right ball joint broke while driving at low speed. Replaced ball joint, tie rod, sway bar, brake line, abs sensor. Vehicle now triggers ABS when coming to a stop around 5mph even if it is not slipping. Below are the notes from my friend who has helped me work on everything. We're not sure what to do next. Do any of you have ideas?
Notes from mechanic- The Anti-Lock Brake System is engaging the right front wheel right before the vehicle comes to a complete stop. Codes in ABS module for right front wheel speed sensor.
- The right front wheel speed sensor is reading that the right front wheel is not turning the same speed as the other three wheels. This causes the ABS to engage because it thinks the wheel is sliding. In reality it’s not, but it’s reading that it is.
- Codes were pulled from ABS module- right front wheel speed sensor (I do not have the exact code number in my notes, but should still be present in the module when powered up). First thought we had a faulty Speed sensor.
- Performed ohm check of sensor and its wiring. No issue found. Ordered and installed another front right sensor- same condition.
- Thought that possibly the cv axle may have had a different number of teeth on the reluctor wheel- tooth count was checked twice. We counted both sides and they are the same number. Checked for damage on the axle- none found.
- Replaced CV axle again with different brand in case the reluctor wheel was not reading correctly - still same condition.
- Remove wiring terminal and perform ohm check of wiring from ABS module to sensor. No short to ground or disconnected wiring found.
- Check distance of sensor to reluctor wheel. Same on both sides.
- Check wheel size and pressure - sizes are the same- air pressure correct.
Next step would be to check the pressures in the brake calipers to see if they are applying the same pressure to each side. If that value is correct will need to research other possibilities This has now been completed and the pressure is the same
