New starter noise

Replaced starter on my 02 and it starts fine but makes a noise at the end of the cycle like it cranking too much. Kind of a shearing sound. Any idea what’s going on or if I should worry. One mechanic friend said to give it time but I’m not real keen on that. Will try to get video up.

Is the replacement starter from the automated store. Or a remfg denso starter?

Lots of aftermarket starters sadly don't function properly.

It might not be aligned properly. Wouldn't hurt to double check the bolts are good and tight.

Edit: starter relay good. could be sticking or the ignition sticking.

Sounds like the plunger is sticking out too long. If it wasn’t doing it before the starter replacement then I would suspect a bad starter plunger return. I would replace it because it could possibly damage your flywheel/flex plate teeth

If your hearing noises out of a starter that isn't normal. Something is wrong. If the plunger is sticking it will destroy the flex plate. Then that will replaced as well.

I agree with Badluck that it's critical to find out exactly what's going on and fix the issue.

New starter noise

The gear isn’t pulling back all the way or fast enough.

It’s a common problem with the starters in Subaru’s when they get old.

Everything in the gear head needs lubed. If it’s a life time warrenty I’d replace it.

Is it the same sound like when you hold the starter on for too long?

My new starter has this extra sound that only occurs during a warm start.

Basically if the normal starter sound was:

Dut dut dut dut dut dut vrooooom.

The new one is the same but with an extra

Mmmmmmm at the end. As the engine fires up.

Doesn't sound like grinding or damage, just sounds like an electric motor running with no load and then turning off.

What type of starter did you put in? These should always sound the same when replaced as they did when they were brand new. No extra sounds or buzzare behavior at all.

This is interesting thread though..

It's a denso, says made in USA which I thought was cool. I mean overall it sounds slightly different but I just checked this up to it being new. But the main difference is that it has that extra mmmmmmmmm sound like I mentioned.

I actually just reread OP's post and I realized that he did mention like a grinding shearing sound. So yeah definitely not the same

Ok.. :-) As Starters are one thing you don't want is a sticking Bendix or plunger. It is absolutely no fun changing a flex plate or flywheel. :/

Been away for a few weeks and going to check bolts, remove if necessary, reinstall and or replace. Can’t take this noise thinking something is being damaged. On another note someone randomly offered me 9k today, while it’s tempting I’d regret it and not going for it.

If your flexplate is damaged. I have 2 good ones around.

I would definitely investigate what is going on.

Yanked that starter out and put in the Denso -sounds perfect now. I just couldn’t sleep with it the way it was.

Its truly a shame that the aftermarkets starters and alts are junk. I have no idea what they are thinking or what they are trying to accomplish by not rebuilding them properly, its a disgrace as the customers are expecting good rebuilds and are getting banana peels and duct tape horrible ones.. :-(

Good job, at least you shouldn't get stuck from a non-properly functioning starter issue. :-)
