I've done the same thing to my 4th gen. The 3rd gen it is covered by part of the body sheet metal on the cowl. I leave mine set to recirculate at all times, they'd have to chew through the plastic door that closes it off. It's the best solution I've got and it's very easy.
The recirculate shouldn't turn off unless you turn it off if you have the regular manual HVAC controls. I know my 4th gen likes to turn the recirculate off with the auto climate control.
