alternator rebuild kit

Alternator whine/bearing noise on my 96 4runner. I replaced with one from my parts bin. I would like to rebuild the bad alternator and keep it for back up/spare parts.

I see some rebuild kits online. Has anyone done this and is there a preferred vendor?

Not sure how those parts kit will last.

I know when I rebuild a few I am going to use
Rebuild alternator with pics an OEM Parts Numbers Included

You do have to watch as there are 2 different alts for the 3rd gen. Early years 1996-1998 and 1999 to 2002..

My original alt died after about 320k miles. The copper sliprings had worn through. Unfortunately, they are very expensive to replace, thus making a rebuild uneconomic. The best alternative is to buy a toyota rebuilt alt.

Yes, if you have armature damage, its not worth fixing. Same would go for a cracked case. Probably best to verify the alternator is worth rebuilding before buying parts.. I agree. :-)

There should be a jobber number on the bearing seal which is the part number to order and then just get the brushes at the dealer.

For the 70a Alt I have the bearing sizes as another way to order them.

I am wondering if the 90 amp ones Have a different bearing, brushes and regulator. etc.. As i have both 70amp alts and 90 amp alts in my fleet. Looks like I need to tear a few of those apart and figure these out rebuild etc. I have many around here of both..
