Axle nut not threading onto remanufactured CV axle
Got my CV axle swapped out, seals replaced, and everything else torqued back down to spec and now the axle nut won’t thread onto the axle. I have the nut from the previous axle that I was trying, but I read in a few places that they should be replaced every time they are removed. So I went down to the Toyota dealership and bought a brand new one with the same results. I’ve even tried lightly filing the threads to open them up a bit, but the nut just gets super tight almost immediately. Wanted to get some input before I pull out the hacksaw and start with some fresh threads. Thanks guys.

Does the nut from the old axle thread on ok if it does just use that one if it is not damaged. The new axle should have come with a new nut, I have used the old one many times with no problems. Some reman axles use different thread patterns from stock.

It doesn’t thread on at all, will barely start and then gets super tight. That one will still thread on the old cv axle like butter. The remanufactured axle did not come with an axle nut. I’m kinda stuck on what to do here.

I would go back to were you bought the axles and have them get you one that fits. like i said the new axles should come with a new nut
|

Wish I could. Bought them on eBay, but I did send them a concerned message, so we’ll see how that goes. The axle seems fine, I just need a dang nut that will work for this. Was just wondering if others might have had a similar issue and found an alternate nut that can work with this.

Someone probably hit the end of your new axle with a sledge when they were removing it from their vehicle and mashed the outer threads a little bit before they sent it in to be re-manufactured. Try holding the old axle threads next to the new axle threads and see if the thread pitch is the same. You may have to run a M28X1.5 die down it to rebuild the outer threads.

They seem to be about the same pitch, but it doesn’t feel like it when I’m wrenching it down. Even tried using a tiny file to open up the treads a bit more, but it didn’t seem to help. I’m contemplating cutting a couple threads worth of metal from the shaft to get a fresh set of threads. Just worried that it still might not work and then I’d be stuck with the axle because I cut it and can’t return it.

That really sucks. Who is the re builder? Sounds like they didn't check the threads. There's not many threads to be cut off between the end of the axle and the cotter pin hole. I'd order a die and fix the threads or return the axles.

I’m in the Bay Area and they’re in Arizona. I bought it on eBay from Desert Toyota of Tucson. This is my daily driver, so now I gotta take everything apart again and put the old one back in so I can get to work and stuff. Just sucks having to waste all of this time because of one nut.

They should warranty the axle and cover the shipping back. The nut should go on smoothly. I wouldn't try to make that work. It's their responsibility to give you a quality product.
You're in my area and I get a discount at Stevens Creek Toyota. I could maybe meet you at the dealership parts department and you could use my discount to buy an axle from them.

Hey Tim, yeah I could meet you there at the parts center. I’m just a few miles away from there. I see the part listed on their website for $316.09, but don’t they charge more when you go into the parts center and buy it rather than ordering online and then picking it up? I saw the knuckle oil seal online from their website for like $50 and when I called in to check if they had the part, they said they did, but it was like over $100. Anyways, yeah lemme know when to meet you there and I’ll make it over.
