Angry 98 rear hatch/lift gate Lock Cylinder 69055-35070

Hi All,
Some friggin crackhead thought it would be a good idea to steal my 98 SR5 T4R. I had it disabled so he wasn’t able to get it running but he did tear the hell out of it. I’ve been searching all over online and on here and can’t find a lock cylinder for the lift gate on my 98 T4R. Toyota says they are discontinued and I can’t find an aftermarket one either. I am to the point I will start checking salvage yards but the few I have talked to want to sell the whole lift gate (none available so far) not just the lock cylinder. Anybody else run into this problem? Any suggestions or solutions? I haven’t opened up the lift gate yet to look at it but would be fine with just being able to lock the lift gate with a key. Not too worried about using the window or having the fob work as this is a spare rig I leave in Oregon to use when I visit family and travel.
Thanks

Yes. I have a few rear door cylinders frozen and haven't found a replacement as those all need to be re keyed to match the other cylinders by a locksmith. Unless your really handy with the cylinders being redone. I have yet to find a solution.

Brillo,
What do you mean by “frozen”? Like all corroded and froze up and not able to get a key in? Or do you mean they just need to be rekeyed by a locksmith? Wasn’t quite sure what you meant. Also what year? 96-98 are the same lock cylinder, (same part number) are any of them those years? If a key will slide in them and they are from 96-98 I would be interested in buying one from you if your interested in selling one.
When I bought my T4R it had different door lock and ignition keys. They ignition key was nicer and heavier duty so I went to the salvage yard and found door lock cylinders to match that style key and took them to the locksmith and had them rekeyed so everything matched. That is what I plan to do if I can find a rear hatch lock cylinder.
Thanks,
Bruce

You're welcome. I get the majority of my parts from there. I didn't notice your profile said Alaska until now. I'm not sure how that will affect shipping prices, but when you gotta have it what can you do

Bad Luck,

Exactly, when you need it and nobody else seems to have one…just pay the price and move on. They’re checking availability right now, I hope they have one. The website said they have more than 1

No Go

Well bummer. Just received this from Amayama Trading Co. Ltd. Looking more all the time like a salvage yard is the only option for this lock cylinder. What I don’t understand is why all the aftermarket outfits would stop making these. I would think there are lots of 3rd gens out there and would still be some demand, but what do I know.

Check out PNW 4Runner Connection on Facebook. I have bought a few parts off Josh and they have always been as described.

Another option is The 4Runner House in Garland, TX. He has a couple of 3rd Gens at his shop for parts right now. I live 5 minutes from the shop if you want to DM me I can reach out to him personally.

So I had time to do some more looking around at old threads, doesn’t seem to be many recent ones. I found a several mentions of the lock cylinder breaking off the license plate garnish. (Plastic license plate holder) a common occurrence.

Maritimer had this to say on one thread I read,

“What I did for the time being is tied the lock up tight out of the way of the rear window mechanism, and put duct tape over the hole from the inside, then I filled the hole from the outside with silicon wax I use for braces. The hole is plugged and tidy and everything is fine except I can't use the key for the back door. The rest of the locking works, though.”

This leads me to believe that the tailgate is still able to be locked by the switch on the drivers door and the key fob. Is that correct?

My rig is in Oregon and I’m in Alaska so I can’t take it apart right now to check it out. If I’m still able to lock the rig up with the lock cylinder being broke off the plastic garnish, I don’t have to worry about getting a lock cylinder and getting it fixed right away when I get there in December.
Thanks,
Bruce

Not sure if it helps or not, but they do make a kit with all the locks that take keys. Everything. Glove box , ignition and all. Go to your Toyota dealership in find the parts manager, tell them you want a divorce keylock kit for your rig. I bought one for my 99’. I don’t know if yours is different or not.

I need to finish getting mine installed. I need some door checkers, sucks that they blocked that Russian import deal….
