Live and learn, baby. I had a similar experience a few years ago when my truck was totaled. Went to a friend of a friend who did body work in his shop at home. Took about three months total to get a driver door, driver fender and some other minor body panel work completed. This included painting the door and fender and installation.

I was very frustrated that it took as long as it did. But when someone is doing you a favor you gotta be patient, I guess. Again, live and learn. Hoping ECGS will get you squared away soon enough though. This is unfortunate that if happened to you. But this is just a part of the process.

It doesn't get you the refund you deserve, but you can at least leave an honest description of his incompetence at Google reviews. They hate that.

Just talked with Thomas at ECGS. They are only 2 1/2 hours from me. He took me through the ordering process. I am picking up the 4Runner tonight and will know what ratio I need to order. Thomas was great in explaining everything. Total price out the door including install approx $1350. He said should take about 3 hours and I would be headed home.

I'm gonna let them do the install (will cost about $400 or so) and then have the confidence it was done correctly.

My mechanic had done some other work and just texted me "no charge." He's a great guy. He works out of his home and just couldn't get to the rear diff. I don't know how I feel about me paying for it all. I'll just pray and see how everything unfolds...

Thank all of you! Problem solved!
You'll be very impressed with the ECGS operation. If you get a chance to meet the CEO, Chase Perry, tell him Timmy the Toolman says Howdy.

The rear diff capacity is 2.6 quarts w/o a locker and 2.9 quarts w/ a locker

So 2 quarts isn't super low. I agree with with Randy it was damaged or on on its way out before the welding took place. 2 Cups low wouldn't damage it.

I had one that was ran low by a PO. Which wore the pinon gear and the ring. I ran the 3rd member for like 70K miles this way with heavy duty oil stabilizer in it until I replaced it. So unless they damaged the ring gear by welding the wrong axle cover on and jammed the ring gear into with the lateral control arm the housing like happened to another forum member.

How often was the gear oil changed and checked?

Plus any hole wither on top or bottom of the axle cover will leak gear oil as once the diff the starts moving it will fling the gear oil everywhere.

Low oil mostly get the pinon bearing first as I had as I had another PO run 3rd member completely out and the pinion bearing failed busting teeth off the pinon and ring.

The Good news Is ECGS will fix you right up.. :-)

I run Amsoil Severe Gear and change every 50K. I ain't blaming the welder. He is not the mechanic. Two different people.

I always add 3 qts when I change it. The pin hole was just enough to see a wet spot about the size of a quarter. Most people probably wouldn't have fixed it. LOL
It was at the very top of cover.

I can't remember the gear ratio codes but you don't have an e-locker because you're missing the e-locker switch. Another dead give-away is look at the rear diff on the driver side. You will see you lack the e-locker actuator motor.

That looks alot better. Idk. I ran toyotas for a long time and I personally don't think 2 to 3 cups low would be enough to damage the 3rd member. As the capacity isn't 3 quarts so yours may have been Slightly overfilled which wouldn't have again been enough to hurt anything either. At this point it's replacement time anyhow. As regardless the damage is done.

Was the front Pinon seal ever changed by chace?? As those can be over tightened and thus do damage down the road as well.
