I have a 1998 4Runner SR5 4wd with 188k miles, and I've tried searching for other threads for similar problems, but I haven't found a solution yet. I have a leak coming from the steering rack, and a couple of shops recommended that it just be replaced, but it is only leaking from one of the lines, so if I could get a few years out of The picture that I have attached isn't mine, but this line is where the leak is coming from, right between the fitting and the line itself. I've heard that this isn't a high pressure line and that I could just put a compression fitting on it, but I just wanted to get someone else's opinion on that. Plus I don't know what size fitting or line this is. I have bent brake lines before for my 85 Pickup, so if that would be a better option I might just go that route.
Also, there's a noise that is something like a scraping or grinding noise, sounds a lot like a bad bearing, that I can't figure out. It happens about a second after you take your foot off the gas, and then stays until about 10ish MPH. I had the front left wheel bearing replaced thinking that was the problem, and greased the u-joints, but the noise is still there. I also took it to a transmission shop and they said that it could just be some noise from the 4wd or from the rear brakes, but they didn't recommend anything to be replaced.
Sorry for the long post, but any help would be appreciated, I'm getting tired of leaking atf all over the driveway and this noise is driving me crazy. Thanks!
