Transfer case model number
Okay, time to test your 4Runner knowledge.
Engine model: 5VZ-FE
Transmission model (automatic): A340F
Transfer case model: ???
What is the model number for a 3rd gen transfer case? Am I just assuming incorrectly that they have a model number?

The transfer case of 3rd gen 4runners are either VF2A which is the standard transfer case (I believe including all the electronic actuating versions), or VF3AM which is the multi-mode (locking center differential) found in 99-00 Limited models and all 4WD models 01-02.

F = 4WD
Transmission Model R150 & R150F
R = A family of manual transmissions built by Aisin-Warner
1 = The 1st generation transmission of the R family
5 = 5-speed
0 = Application designation, 0 is earliest designation
F = 4WD
Transmission Model W59
*An older 2 digit naming designation as opposed to 3 digits after the family name*
W = A family of manual transmissions built by Aisin-Warner normally associated with I4 engines
5 = 5th generation of the W transmission family
9 = Application designation
Transfer Case Model VF2A & VF3AM
VF = Family of Toyota transfer cases with a chain driven front output

A = part-time 4WD (Multi-Mode 4WD)
B = full-time 4WD (the one used in the 95-series prado)

Awesome!
Not only did you know the model names of all the drivetrain components, but you know the breakdown of the codes themselves. Thank you both. I stand in awe of your massive brains.

All of this reminded me of a website I used like a decoder ring for figuring out my differential gear ratio in preparation for doing a factory e-locker swap. I thought it would be nice to sort of close the loop on this drivetrain model number love-fest by including a link to the website that has all of the codes explained:
off-road.com
You can find your code on the VIN plate on the door sill (e.g., A03A) and go to town.

The only difference between the two is the transfer case shift lever is a different shape. On automatic transmissions the shift lever goes towards the left, and on manual transmissions the shift lever goes to the right. The transfer case shift levers will interchange between the two.
