How can you avoid burning clutches in an Auto Transmission

Rocket Rod in Australia has posted a video of a tear down of a Land Cruiser 200 series transmission.

great video overall, subscribed. Most people don't know the reason of 4 low, because you can almost do the same in hi range pressing more on the gas. Low range is to save your transmission and many other things. Use it.

Great info - thanks for posting. Overall its still about avoiding High trans fluid temps.

So besides proper OCI (is 30K the general consensus for a drain/fill?), using OD override when climbing hills/mountain passes and/or towing, perhaps using auxiliary cooling, we also need to remember to use Lo on slow steep climbs, slow yet steady maneuvers and such. I don't do much of the last, yet will use Lo more often from now on.

Also on the 01-02s you can start in 2nd gear to avoid the 1-2 shift jolt if you're planning on going that 'fast'. Luck all.

Man, that video could have been so much better if the camera work didn't suck. I was interested in seeing how the transmission came apart but the crazy camera angles ruined it and I couldn't watch it.

But yeah, the thing to take away is heat is the killer of automatic transmissions. I preach this to everyone I go 4wheeling with to the point jokes are made about "Hot Trannies".

Anyway, I have two videos I've made on this subject matter.

I think a drain and refill every 30k is insufficient. You're only draining out a 1/3 of the capacity, around 4-4.5 quarts of a 12 quart system. This means you're exchanging out 12 quarts every 90k miles.

I do a drain and refill of the pan every other engine oil change or approximately every 10k miles. Why? Because with the way I drive my rig, and with how heavy it is, I'm running higher temps even with a decent size trans cooler. As the temperature of the fluid goes up, the effective life of the fluid goes down. I want to give my trans the best chance at a long life and doing regular drain and refills is the best insurance to achieve that.

If you drive the flat lands for the most part using your rig as a grocery-getter, your trans fluid could last you 100k miles. For anyone who drives a lot in the mountains and/or goes 4wheeling, your trans fluid is not going to last anywhere near 100k, more like 15-30k.

Drain and refills are a dilution process, but it's a very effective way to keep your trans fluid in great shape. I'd rather do regular drain and refills than wait a longer interval and do a full flush/exchange.

I always thought burned clutch packs was a product of not enough line pressure for the job at hand. Hot thin oil would lower line pressure……

I imagine towing in OD would be a great way to burn up a clutch. Assuming it's like a 4L60E.

Towing is always tough on a vehicle, but looking after the transmission temps is a good idea
