If you are going to wait for spring, put in some AT-205 in the system and it should reduce the leak until you can get to it...

Yeah I’m gonna see if my local autozone has it on the way home. Then if not I’ll try Amazon. Hopefully I have good luck with it. If I can prevent the leak from growing till spring then I’ll be pretty happy

It really should. Just slightly thicker fluid should slow the leak down... I don't blame you waiting to spring as it's kinda brutal outside here..

I drove mine with a pretty major rack leak/boot for a year, (I know, I know)
Just keep it topped off so you're not replacing a pump too...

Just bought new ITRs before I noticed my rack had a super small leak on it. The inside of the boot had a drip or two in it when I went to clean them up to reinstall them. That being said since I just dropped $ on the ITRs I think once the rack starts leaking a little more I’m going to attempt rebuilding the rack with an oem rebuild kit (roughly 90$ from partsouq). Definitely not for the faint of heart though. Here is the walkthrough I’ll be using when/if I do it. Part# for rebuild kit: 0444535160

Yep. Several videos out there on how its done and the pricing of the parts. It's really a no brainer as it's about 1/5 the cost of a remfg toyota one.

I honestly don't expect those toyota remfg ones will be around much longer.

I couldn’t find any videos of our specific rack being fully rebuilt. I did find one that had the top hat thing but wasn’t super detailed. All the other videos were for newer tacomas/T4r’s which are quite a bit different I think. Have a link for any of the videos your talking about?

It was enough of a yes brainer for me to keep the downtime to a minimum.
I figure the other 4/5 is chalked up to time, tools, and talent to get a rebuild under control...Would be fun to tackle, but it's my only vehicle for now.

That said, I have a '98 OEM rack up for grabs if someone wants to try their
hand at a refresh!

To each one's own.

Tim shared a link to a video of a guy resealing a steering rack. This video is close to an hour long.

I know that's what I will do if I need one. I will reseal a steering rack and have it ready to go for a swap. This elimates the down time as it's ready to go.

Yea but that’s for a lexus rx300. The video might give a decent idea of what you’re getting into but ours are a bit different and have some special procedures.

I look in my fsm and see. The Lexus rx300 has to be close. To me a rebuild is just a reseal. If your Tie rod ends are toast from washing the grease out. I would look into decent aftermarket ones as Like other posts say the cost of the tie rod ends are like the toyota CV axles way too expensive.

(The only exception would be heavy off roading then probably best to use OEM ones)

Once rack starts leaking, that's what washes the grease out. So you have to get it quick or keep is greased to save those inner tie rods.

There really should be some half decent inner tie rod 3rd party tie rods isn't there?
