3rd gen shocks

Are KYB shocks a good replacement for my 3rd Gen 4runner? Would the Excel-G be the best for close to factory specs? My 4rd gen is a city dweller, just looking to improve the ride as the shocks have never been replaced by the previous owner.

Thanks!

I ran the KYB Monomax for a while. They are fine. I replaced some Monroe and OE SPectrum *Oreilly house brand* that were absolutely garbage.

I have to agree anything manroe won't last and I wouldn't use. I went to billstein after the Monroe were toast. Stay away from the Monroe quick struts too. :/

I've been running the KYB's for a couple years now and have been very happy with them.

I've heard that the KYB gas-a-just are the closest to OEM, and they seem fairly decent. I bought some but haven't put them on yet. I'm waiting for my original ones to leak.

The OEM I believe were made by Tokico. Tokico is like RCA, you still find stuff sold with their name on it, but they were bought long ago.

Thanks!
I can't speak on KYB specifically, but I have heard okay things about them, like what @Pyral said. I think Scotty Kilmer gives them the stamp of approval, too, if that means anything to you.

Just want to add, why not just purchase some OEM Tocikos online? That is if you want that original ride experience. That's what I would do. I recently purchased some from Toyota Parts Deal and have yet to install them. But I got them at a very good price vs. buying them from the actual Toyota dealership. Bilstein is also a very reputable brand (I currently have 5100's front & rear) and would recommend those, too. You've got lots of options.

Well, I didn't know who made them originally. Also, as someone stated that company was bought and not sure about their products. How much did you get a set for?

Thanks!

For the (front shocks) 2 KYB gas-a-just I paid $82.74 including tax and shipping. I could of gone OEM but I believe they were more expensive. This was from rock auto (sept, 2021).

I haven't installed them, but everyone says they are quality

What model year is your rig? On Toyota Parts Deal the OEM Tocikos go for $48.52/ea for my 2001. This is for the rears only.

2001 SR5 2WD. That sounds like a great price. Would you send me a link please? All I'm finding on that site is full shock assemblies.

Thanks!

I've had a full set of KYB gas shocks on my 2000 4Runner for a few years, like them. They seem just a bit stiffer than OEM, which improves the on road handling which is a plus. Rockauto has them for approx $200 for a full set, and they are running a $25 off discount right now.

I've also run them on 1st Gen Tacomas, they hold up pretty well, good bang for the buck shocks/struts. I did try a set of the Excel Gs once, way too soft/weak.

I found that area of the site, but when I check for shocks and struts I only see full assemblies with coils, I don't see any Tocikos.
