Smelling Fuel At Cold Starts

Hey everyone, so I've been trying to diagnose this issue for awhile now but every time I do a cold start, I can smell gas fumes in my vehicle up until the engine warms up.

So far I've already performed a smoke test, visually inspected fuel lines for leaks, replaced fuel filter, installed brand new oem EVAP Canister and the problem still continues.

I doubt it'd fix the problem, but I do plan on replacing my fuel pump assembly just because I have no clue when it was (if ever) replaced so I plan on dropping the tank for a cleaning and installing a new pump too.

Love to hear some suggestions or possibly if anyone else has experienced this problem before.

Thanks In Advance

It's normal for cars to smell worse when they're started up. The catalytic converter isn't warmed up. To make it even worse, on startup engines run rich to account for some factors so the combustion isn't as complete making the exhaust even more smelly.

And to top it off, 3rd gen 4runners are from a different time, the fuel injection technology has progressed a lot. I've had 2 people comment about how smelly my cars exhaust was, even though my 4runner is well looked after and passes CA smog just fine.

Because it goes away, if something is leaking it's probably a leaking exhaust rather than fuel. Check under your manifolds heat shields for cracks. You could test it and see if it's to the point where a carbon monoxide detector would sound.

Oh ok gotcha, yea I do typically go out during the cold months and let it run for 5-10 minutes because I just figure since it's an older vehicle, I should let it heat up a little before driving compared to newer cars where I'd check an email, pick a song and leave 1 minute after start-up lol

Sounds good though, I'll take a look at the exhaust components just in case.

Thanks for the feedback
