Alarm Goes Off With Hatch Open

Hi all,

Ever since I got my runner in '19, if I unlock the truck and only open the hatch, the alarm will go off after a couple minutes. My workaround has been to just open another door before opening the hatch and the truck will know that a door was opened and therefore not set off the alarm.

The part I don't get is that I would think it would have something to do with the door open switch, but my rear dome light will turn on then the hatch is open. So I am a little stumped. Anybody had this issue before? Ideas?

It is a set time each time, or just a general time of a few minutes?

The wire that sends it up to the cluster, or in your case, the security system, might be breaking, which is common. It might just by chance be able to get enough of a current to trigger the alarm after a while.

Does the alarm re-arm after opening the door?

If the back dome light is coming on, it might not just be the door switch acting up. There could be a glitch in the system or a sensor getting the wrong idea about the hatch. Give the wiring around the hatch a look for any wear or loose connections.

And, you know, if there's a sensor specifically for the hatch, that might be the troublemaker. Have you tried cleaning up the latch and making sure it's all good?

I believe it is a set time, I have just never actually timed it, but I'll admit I'm not sure.

What can I do to test if it's the security system, and are there any known fixes?

I'm not sure what you mean about the alarm re-arming after I open the door. The alarm will go off if, after unlocking the truck, I only open the rear hatch and leave it open. However, if I open any other door then the alarm will not go off.

I will take a peek at the wiring this weekend. I guess I'll also give the latch a look while I'm in there. Anything I should be looking for specifically other than damaged wires?

What alarm are you using? (OEM RS3x00 or aftermarket?)

Sounds like the issue is happening when the truck re-locks the doors, which does happen after a set time if one of the passenger doors isn't opened (though it should also not happen when the hatch is opened - does the dash light indicate a door is ajar when just the hatch is opened?).

I believe it's a setting on the security systems to re-arm after fifteen seconds if a door wasn't opened, so I was thinking maybe it could be that.

If you're going to take a look at the latch, there unfortunately isn't much to look for. Habanero has a detailed post on her build thread that takes it apart and talks about it, but I think the easier option is to just replace the latch.

I'd give her thread a look and then decide what to do. I guess if you wanted you could always use a multimeter to test continuity on the latch closed vs open and see if there's anything weird going on there.

I believe this is what's happening. OEM alarm with the Toyota alarm stickers on the window. With only the hatch open, the dash does show the door is ajar. Is there something not communicating between the alarm system and the brain of the truck which knows the hatch is open? What could I look for?

I think you're on the right track - the alarm definitely goes off when the truck goes to re-lock the doors since it thinks the hatch is closed for some reason.
Thanks for the advice. I'll check out her thread regarding the latch, give it a continuity test and maybe just grab a new one from pick-n-pull.
