It was probably a bead blast finish originally. It'll be tough to get the right finish with sand paper. It'll be very interesting to see your results.

I'm finding sanding in one direction makes a big difference

If you don't sand in circles, you can get the surface uneven. Maybe not a big deal in your particular project. I just learned what I learned from a professional body folks.

Body work over filler for sure. This is just removing oxidation from the sport skid. Going in circles changed the finish from a smooth satin to just swirls and scratches. I found going back and forth horizontally got rid of the oxidation, maintained a satin finish, and then I just put a bit of metal polish on a pad attached to a drill and finished it up. Came out looking like new.

I looked like a chimney sweep when I got done with this one. Everything under the truck from skids to spare and the frame and chassis as well as all bumper bracketry have been degreased, cleaned up, and a fresh coat of satin black paint applied. It all looks brand new. Replaced any bolts that looked bad as well with brand new factory Toyota bolts and coated the threads with anti seize before I put them in. Put some Rust Reformer on the back of the chrome bumpers for the surface rust and hit that with some satin black as well.

Video in third post. To do list is getting pretty short now.

Next up will be a refresh of the interior.

After

I feel better knowing it's all sealed up and protected.

I can't think of much else I need to do maintenance wise. The steering rack is good, bushings seem good, axles and boots good.

I will swap out the fuel filter again. It's due but I swapped the one on my riding mower after 15 years and cut it open and it was like brand new inside so probably not a huge deal.

Now I can move on to some more fun stuff.

Katzkins ordered. Found a guy on the Tundra forum that did forum discounts

Small update. Custom interior is still on order and hasn't arrived yet. Maybe next week.

In the mean time I disassembled the console to install the new leather cover from JF Customs on Ebay. Again I HIGHLY recommend them, super good to work with and the cover is actual leather and high quality at that.

Once I got the console removed/disassembled (easy) I realized it takes a special staple with a 3mm leg. This is a very short staple to avoid going through the thin plastic when stapling the leather to the console lid and isn't a standard staple. My console also needed a bit of a beef up in padding and I planned to use some 1/4" thick neoprene for that and some spray adhesive to put it all together. Finding a pneumatic staple gun for the special staples turned into a bit of a project and cost for something I'd likely use one time. I considered adding some leather or vinyl strips to the back side of the console lid to allow for use if the 1/4" staples but meh.

I went by the upholstery shop I'm going to have install the custom leather when it arrives to ask what they'd charge me to put the console cover on. Free was the answer since it was such a simple job and they'd add the necessary additional foam to boot. Got it back and it looks great. Can't beat free. I'll buy the guy lunch when he does the seats as a thanks.

Next up will be the new interior and I can't wait to see how it looks.

I still have extra JF Custom console covers. If you can use one lemme know, cover shipping and it's yours.

I got the JF Customs console cover black with tan stitching and I think it looks pretty good with the oak interior.

It was an image from faceplace. Seems it showed up for a while and has now disappeared.

My webhosting company tripled the yearly rate and I'm not renewing. Pics will soon go poof unfortunately. I may get a new provider, still thinking if I really need it.

I expected the install to be harder to be honest. I'm kind of enjoying it. Relaxing.
