Replace the upstream one, it does all the heavy lifting. I doubt it's the rear one giving you the headache. I can vouch for the Magnaflow ones, I have one on mine and it passed with almost all 0's across the board. Probably cleaner air coming out of my exhaust than the air we breathe when that wildfire smoke sets in...

I just put on a complete 99' Fed emissions OEM exhaust from downpipe to tail pipe with no regrets, its available still and expensive but its good for the next decade or so, and came with the rubber anti-vibe insulator infront of the muffler that Ive never seen, I also added all new O2 sensors & hardware, and the O2 sensor SS covers from the Sequoia, tapped all the crimped OE nuts for easy maintenance in the future, no emissions here but any other options will last half as long and cause more downtime and frustration if you can't weld exhaust(especially in the rust belt), unless it's very high end aftermarket.

My p0420 didn't go away after a front 02, rear 02, then front cat, then rear cat finally did it. Both magnaflows, the rear one being a 50 state weld in. What a pain in the ass.

My truck has had the p0420 code since I started driving it about a year ago. I got my 4R from my parents and apparently the CEL has been on and throwing that code for 5+ years…

The car runs great which I guess is why it wasn’t addressed earlier. After that amount of time I feel like I’d know if it was something serious, but I’m definitely checking out what could be causing the code ASAP now, just for the peace of mind

Both of my trucks have P0420 and have since I bought them. I've replaced the cheap parts to no avail. We don't do smog testing in Michigan so I quit worrying about it.

Since covid I haven't even bothered going for an inspection since '20, cops just don't care here anymore, is that an option for you?
From the Texas DPS website:
Which vehicles are required to have the emissions test?

Vehicles registered in designated counties. Designated counties include: Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, and Williamson.

Your county requires it. I live in Bell county. We have no emissions testing.

Maybe the police in Austin don't care because they're being marginalized and defunded by the socialist trash that is running the city into the ground.

Austin is no longer Texas. It's basically Portland in it's infancy. Give it 20 years.
