Unhappy Rattle sound when accelerating

Having a little problem that my mechanic cannot seem to figure out. When I first step on the gas, I hear a metal rattling sound like it could be a heat shield or something. Nothing that we can tell is loose under the truck but we hear it from under the truck towards that front. It usually happens when accelerating from a stop or accelerating after I've been coasting.

It's not the brakes because they are relatively new. It's a thin(ish) metal rattling sound that goes away after you step on the gas harder and start to go faster.

Thanks for your help.

Heat shield from what you're describing. Look right around the cat. Mine rusted there so I ripped it off.

I had the same sound and it turned out to be one of the skid plate bolts was loose.

Suggestion - get on your back under your truck and start banging on **** to try to isolate the sound. Don't bang too hard as I don't want you to come on here when you break something and try to get me to cover your repairs. Sounds like at loose heat shield based on the thin metal sound you're describing. Also, check the dust shields on your front rotors as they oftentimes bend when hit on something or your mechanic places his hand on it when doing the brakes.

I say you jack the rear end up and set the cruise around 35 mph. Go high and low looking for the sound that way. It's what helped me solve a similar issue which ended up being my drive shaft making the noise.

I think TFJ- 4Runner may be on to something, at least with the noise I have. It has finally gotten bad enough to hear it at a walking pace and appears to be coming from the back of the transfer case.

FYI - the noise I have is related to speed and cannot be replicated in park by revving the engine.

Tomorrow I will crawl under and see what might be making the noise. I did grease the zerts less then a year ago, so we will see what fun lies ahead.

Did you make sure the rubber block and bracket on the transfer case were fastened tightly?

When my universal was failing. The vibration kept getting worse. You could actually see movement in the universal.

To check universal it's best to have all 4 wheels off the ground and put your transfer case in neutral.

You want to shake the joint and if you have moment. It's going bad. Like movement left to right or up and down besides it's normal movement.

When the needle bearings fail you can see it or feel it.

Mostly you see the play when Turing the driveshafts one way or the other...

Once driveshaft ruled out. Check your heat shields and exhaust as they love to rattle. Especially the cat cover...

I second this. You can either repair the heat shields or rip them off. I prefer to yank them though since the bolts and nuts are usually rusted. Just cut em off with an angle grinder or something.
