96 4Runner Wont Start After Airbag Deployment

Hello,

I have a 96 4Runner that won't crank at all after the airbags went off. I know Ford used a resettable inertia switch, but what did Toyota do to prevent cranking? Has anyone been in this situation before?

Thank you,
Mason

Never had that happen, but I don't think this generation has anything to stop operation in a crash. Toyota didn't even use event data recorders (EDR) on any of their vehicles in the US until the very tail end of the 3rd gens life.

There is no fuel pump cut off either. Any problem you have is not by design.

The airbag system blows the fuel pump fuse when deployed on many vehicles to my knowledge. no 1st hand exp with the 3rd gen 4runners

Ok thank you for the help, I will say that the ABS is on with the key on like normal, but then it starts flashing rapidly after 5 or so seconds. I just checked a couple fuses and they seemed all good. I located the SRS module and disconnected it (no harm if the airbags already went) to see if anything would happen, nothing. Then I tried resetting the alarm system under the drivers seat, and still nothing.

From what it seems like your telling me it's probably an issue directed toward the starting system and not the SRS system. I will try and continue this tomorrow.

I bought my first 97 4Runner with front end damage and both airbags blown. I Started it up and drove it home. It must be something else causing your issue.

Mike's right, both my 98 and my friend's 98 have had airbags deploy and both run and drive fine afterwards

I can only give you my firsthand experience, but when I wrecked and totaled my 96, I am 99% sure the truck turned off. I don't remember whether or not it started again but I would like to think it did since it had to go onto the wrecker. This was a 96 base model though, so I can't imagine it had anything special in it, given it was the first year of the 3rd gen and a base model at that.

Just an update, I figured out the problem. My 4Runner needed to get towed when the airbags went off, yet the engine was still running when the bags went off. I came back to the vehicle the next morning and the towing company claimed the frame was bent and I should trade the title for the cost of the tow. This was after they went through all my items in the vehicle and pulled out what they thought was valuable. I looked under the vehicle and saw no bends in the frame but it wouldn't start. I found this a bit suspicious at the time but I just assumed they didn't know what they are talking about. I got the 4Runner out of their yard and brought it to a place where I can use a lift and diagnosis it a bit more. I found that the AM2 fuse blew, I am not sure what this fuse powers exactly, but it must power a lot of modules in the vehicle as a lot of dash lights would not light up and it wouldn't crank. Even a scan tool couldn't communicate with the vehicle because of this. I replaced the fuse and it started right up, what I am not sure of is how the fuse blew, the vehicle was still running when the airbags deployed and the engine would have just shut off without this fuse. So it somehow "blew" in the tow yard, whether they made it blow or they put a faulty fuse in it, or it could have just been a coincidence. Later I lifted up the vehicle and examined the frame, it isn't bent at all. Talk about sketchy tow yards.

But anyways thanks for the help, with all of this.

Wouldn't be shocked if the tow company messed with it. They are usually degenerates.

Yeah, I'm not surprised one bit by the tow company shenanigans. They exist just to make a buck off of people and don't care about anything in between. When I wrecked my 4runner despite the pleas from the police I got in and drove it out of there, saved me a load on towing plus I didn't have to deal with any of those problems.

Hope you get everything figured out

If my vehicles ever get towed they go to the mechanic or body shop I choose or to my property.

I don't blame you, my boss got tboned in his f250 and the tow yard it was in basically held it hostage and wouldn't even let the insurance adjuster in. my buddy had to sneak in to take off the trailer hitch because the insurance refused to pay for that too, and the tow yard wouldn't let them just have it back

just a big mess all around

Glad you got it running. Sadly, you have to watch everything. Lots of tow companies extremely sketcky.. Granted, not all. Just like everything else. All my tows get towed home.
Or like @badluck says auto body repair shop.

I can pay to have it towed elsewhere if need be. I don't know about other states or areas. I have AAA towing up to 100 mile radius. It's well worth its price per year. Granted, mostly I make home. I am rarely more then 100 miles from home in most of my rigs.

It's a racket. Most cities and townships out here have a contract with towing companies. It's all obout squeezing the folks out of money,, so that they can generate revenew.
