Running OEM antenna cable

I'm "lucky" enough that I have the base model 4runner so it came with a fixed antenna instead of the power one, but....the antenna completely corroded away and I ended up ordering a new part from the dealership. I believe I've watched pretty much every video out there on how to change it, and putting the mast in the fender seems straightforward enough, but how the hell do I run the cable into the firewall? I'd like to run it at the factory clip locations but in all the videos I've seen, they just pretty much let it hang in the dash. It definitely looks like a huge pain in the ass running it on the firewall.

Any chance someone has a link to the FSM section for changing the antenna?

That antenna wire oem from the head unit to antenna is really in there. It comes through a Grommet in your fender well way up in there. Unless your having issues. I just change the mast ans reuse that cable antenna wire.

If I remember, I take a photo of where that Grommet off my parts mobile...

I completely destroyed it while trying to get the chrome nut off, so it definitely needs to be replaced. I wish I never touched it but it's a bit too late for that.

The chrome part can be hard to remove, I was lucky that at the time I removed mine I also had a watch case back removal tool which is the ideal tool.

The wire comes out through a grommet in the fender, which you can see here.

The hardest part is removing the fender liner, there is no way to get it from behind, and the clips were strong enough that they bent the metal bracket they were snapped into. It was ridiculously hard for me to remove it.

Replacing the stock antenna requires routing the cable through the dash and to the radio. I had to remove the glovebox and center trim and the glove box light. Tie the new antenna cord to the old one and use it to pull it back through.

I posted this a long time ago but on mine I gave up trying to follow the original path inside the truck. After getting the new cable thru the grommet I found that Toyota had run the cable to the dash and then installed the ductwork. To use the original path would have involved a ton of work. I just ran mine under the passenger carpet to the radio.

Mine was replaced at the dealer early in the truck's life - and even they didn't route it correctly... It hangs out below the blower motor, kinda tucked up under the lower dash pad. Don't think that one will ever get fixed...

The original routing may not even be feasible. When I pulled my parts mobile apart. I couldn't believe how they have it routed. Its definitely put in without anything in the chassis yet. I suspect all the heating /ac and even their controls are not installed yet. So if it will not pull through from the radio dash area with the new wire tapped on. I would just reroute it to were you can get through. As its not worth tearing everything out.. Just to get an antenna wire through..:-)

D'oh! Like always I end up opening a can of worms with these "small" fixes. I figured it would be pretty much impossible to run the cable in the original location, as it sits on top of the safety bar thing. I can't even find where it goes on the firewall side. Maybe I'll just cut And splice it super Mickey -mouse style.

If it were me. I would just run a new
Antenna wire. You probably can get to that Grommet then run it as you see fit.. As always your call..

Maybe this wasn't clear from my first answer, your not going to find where the grommet exits on the outside if your looking at the fire wall. It exits INSIDE the fender, in a space between the outer body and the engine bay cavity. The cable never enters the engine bay at all.

(photo from another thread when I did this)

The only way you can access the grommet from the outside is to remove the plastic that lines the front passenger wheel well and look near where the power antenna motor is.

With the stock setup, the cable has to be replaced because there is no way to unplug it from the antenna, and it's shielded meaning you can't splice a new end on and get good results. Some aftermarket solutions allow you to remove the cable from the antenna. Hopefully yours was done this way.

The grommet is another interesting thing. You can only reuse it by cutting the old cable and sliding it off. There is a stopper along the cable to prevent too much cable from coming outside the vehicle, and on the other side there is a power antenna. Even if you managed to get it over the stopper, you'd still have the plug that wont fit through. There is no way around this, you have to cut the cable..

I managed to follow the stock cable route and use all the cable clips along the way. At a minimum you need to remove the glove box, the panel that the glove box light is attached to, and the whole center part (you have to remove this anyways to plug the new cable into the back of the radio). It doesn't require any special tools. It's doable, but it's difficult.

Did you order an OEM fixed antenna and do you have a part number?

Thanks.

Pyral, I really appreciate the thorough response. I knew about the grommet behind the wheel liner and The new antenna came complete with the grommet and everything else.

I was able to get it installed and like you said it was a *****. I used the four little clips that run along the metal support bar too and I think I did it correctly.

Yes, fixed OEM but my model so that's what it came with. You can also switch out the power antenna for this one but it is kind of a pain in the ass. It wasn't cheap either, I bought it from that JoJo guy who is mentioned on the front page.
