Tire Shops what the f_g!
Bought set of 5 Stars this past Saturday have them ready to swap out to current tires I've been running 5/8" tread depth.
4 shops said no can't do it industry has gotten away from swapping used tires,or doing work on aftermarket rims,
older OE rims.
Money grubbing lying bastids. Happening where your at?

Try a mom and pop tire shop. Big chain stores are useless.

I can see that there's some form of liability in it for a shop, but I think they would have said so. "Hey, we'd love to do 'this' for you, but because the tires are used we, due to liabilities, cannot." I don't think they were necessarily being money grubbing lying bastards, but they also didn't provide you with a full explanation.
As
@ JustTroItIn
said, if you have a small mom-and-pop place, or like around me we have all these places that specialize in used wheels and tires, just have them do it. I had a set changed out for something like $100 a few years ago.

Must not be discount tire. Beacuse they mounted mine without a care. but i don't go there anymore because they put all the swollen lugs back on my Avalon and didn't say shit. Took me 3 hours to hammer every last one of them off.

LOL. They had the torque setting on "send it!" mode on those lugs.

GM uses those same capped lug nuts that love to change sizes. I have a 22.5mm and 19.5mm socket just for the swollen ones.

I've had tire shops cross thread the lugs on all 4 wheels. I had another put 2 of the lug covers on with a hammer, smashing them enough to be bent but not from outward appearances when stopped. I've had Discount Tire give me a good price on tires, then charge me an arm and a leg for new valve stems. A guy from a repair shop comes in (while I'm standing at the DT counter) and asks for stems. The DT guy sells them to him for a buck apiece... then looks at me. I said 'I won't ever be back at a DT'.
All these shops will cheat you, even the dealerships, given the chance.

Found out some background on this chit, it is about the money.
Shortage of workers only so many hours in a week take only jobs that make the most money,
Mavis Firestone Gateway Big Ten all within 2 miles of house.
Went to Truck 4x4 shop 10 mi away sure no problem, make appointment they all short handed. Place told what's going on.
Like the rest of you and stories never trust nobody when it comes to lug nuts been burnt myself.
I'll retorque my stuff when back at house hope they don't screw up either set of wheels.

Yup, a ma and pa shop is the way to go. I've had my local shop swap so many used tires around for me that they know me by name now lol. Plus they only charged $5/tire, $20/tire if they were disposing it. It was way cheaper than any chain place I went to.

Not Quite. Toyota has been using a 2piece "capped" lug nut. It's a 20.5mm nut, with a 21mm chromed sheetmetal cover. They are dissimilar metals, so over time the outer layer swells, making it impossible to get a 21mm lug wrench on without a lot of cursing and hammering...

Oh I see now. That's interesting. It's a good thing to know though. Sure, they "look good", but functionally they are "inferior".
Good to know if anyone is ever replacing their lugnuts. Don't get capped, especially if you're going to be in a situation where you have to change a wheel off-road, in the snow or mud.

If it's only a single speed for sure but if you have low speed settings it should work okay. My Hercules gun maybe puts 50lbs of force on the lowest setting with just an ugga no dugga. Then I just come back and get it up to spec with the torque wrench.
