It's, I think, a few issues:

Originally

1] Vibration issue coming from u joint and possibly other things

2] oil pan issue with oil leaking in thst area.

Kept taking back to the same place or 2 without getting issues resolved.

Then it the driveshaft let loose and destroyed the 3rd member gas tank transfer case and transmission.

One of the 2 shops replaced all those damaged components with used parts that could be leaking.

I was razing the OP with keep going back to the same places without getting the issue resolved for warranty repairs and ended up in a catastrophic failure.

As I would never go more than 3 times for the same issue anywhere because they obviously can't fix the issue

Now you 2 are all caught up.

It's really a shame, and I am wondering if it was not only the u joint and they fixed it, not checking the Pinon bearing. Thus, that may have failed and took out the u joint again. However this last part is just a guess..

And maybe I missed things lots or reading on this one...:/

TLDR:

-OP only goes to shops for work

-dirty mike and the boys Toyota specialty shop replaced his oil pan gasket with one made from old shopping cart wheels

-all the jack daniels in the OPs crank case leaked out

-driveshaft was made out of a dried up possum carcass

-dirty mike said the possum is fine and doesn’t need fixed

-OP took his rig to tweaker sals Toyota specialty shop and told sal to fix the possum, sal ate the possum

-OP hand carved a driveshaft out of melted dragon dildos and had dirty mike install it

- driveshaft explodes, The whole rig explodes

-???

- $40k in repairs later op regrets not getting a tom woods driveshaft

Second time a shop screws up a job, they either don't want to work on your shit
and/or they're incompetent. OP kept insisting until said shop finally blew said shit
completely up.

The op did what a lot of folks who don't work on their own cars do. The shop is responsible for initial fix and the follow up warranty work. The shop misdiagnosed and did shoddy work. @adkinsadam1 , file a suit against the shop. It will cost you intially a few grand but when you win they will have to pay you for your attorney fees and cost. I am sure a lot of folks in the jury pool have had bad experiences with auto shops. Good luck.

I thought the shop replaced all the damaged parts with available used parts?

I don't disagree. I just know from past experiences. This mostly doesn't end well. Could spend several k and end up with nothing too...

After 2 times and not resolved, you go elsewhere for a 2nd of not 3rd opinion.

As I think all this could have been avoided if the universal and possible Pinon bearing was fixed. Unless I misunderstood something.

As it's possible, a misdiagnosis from the beginning as well.

Plus, we have one side of the story. What's the other 2 shops say or have records of. That we have no clue.

It's a shame anyway you cut it really.

I hate to also say this, but that shop isn't going to make things right. They are cutting corners and avoiding working on your 4Runner. I also don't know if all the interactions have been civil on both sides. You mentioned the owner yelled at you for not calling ahead, you might be on their 'bad list' and you are never going to get good service there again as they know they can make more money working on other people's cars that are not warranty services. They way I see things, you have a few options:

1. Keep bugging them to fix your 4Runner. This may never have resolution as they will eventually just decline to fix it. You might already be at that point.

2. Pay another shop to fix it. This will be expensive considering you now have a transmission issue.

3. Sell the 4Runner. Yes, I really mean sell it. The nightmare will be over.

Contrary to how it may seem, I do have shops work on my 4Runner for more complex jobs and when I do it's always the dealership. I know if there's issues they will make it right, every time. There is a price for customer service and taking pride in their work, as I've never had a job done wrong at a dealership for any of my cars. Before then I went to a private shop with good prices to work on my 91 Toyota as I was also learning to fix simpler jobs myself. They changed ownership and replaced most of the staff. On one time after an oil change they told me I was due for a timing belt change. They had just done that same job 1 year and 5,000 miles ago at their very own shop. I never went back.

Boy howdy this makes me feel so much better about doing as much of my own work as possible. Only time I did go to a shop to avoid a somewhat dangerous job they screwed it up (nothing too serious). They did make it right though so I'm not going to throw any shade on here.

I agree with @gamefreakgc Granted I know entire thing sucks and should have been avoided. Its also why I do 95% of it all myself. For those that cant or don't have time to its sad out there. As I am not sure what the solution would be as garages and dealerships can both make drastic mistakes.

The OP was at the mercy of the garages that they knew what they were doing and would do the job properly the first time. Would have saved lots of grief and aggravation.

Holy Moley! Talk about catastrophic incompetence! Sounds like someone owes you a new truck + damages for personal anguish.

I'd contact the Better Business Bureau and retain legal counsel while documenting everything done or not done. I'd even go so far as to contact the local news station and put a public spotlight on these shade tree mechanics. FFS, it's your vehicle and you absolutely know when somethings not right! Last I checked, a good business model is to listen to the customer and address their concerns as top priority, then verify and validate. I'd tactfully be their worst fricken nightmare until they own the f*** up! I had a sorta similar situation. Bought two cars from a dealership. First the transmission went out on one and then a head gasket blew on the other used car i'd bought from them. They didn't want to fix either until I made such a scene in the general managers office it had them running for cover. (not really - but I made my presence known and worried my wife thinking i'd blown a gasket or two!) But they did fix both vehicles. Needless to say, "The squeaky wheel gets the grease"... be diligent in being a pain in their arse until they rectify the situation to amicable satisfaction.

You've been through the ringer... don't take any crap off those so-called experts or professionals (titles don't impress me) call them on their sh*t and hold them accountable.

Good luck! You need some at this point.
