Clearing CEL Light

Hey everyone,
I have a Check Engine Light as well as the two VSC lights on. Codes were P0440 and P0442. Basically just a fuel/evap leak. I think I might have fixed the issue. I can’t clear the codes because I don’t have a scanner myself and it’s like a 30 minute drive to the nearest scanner (lol).

If I disconnect the negative terminal of the battery will this get rid of all 3 lights?
Is there some other way to do this? TIA.

2001 Limited 4WD.

Need to use a scanning tool to clear it.

Sometimes auto parts will scan and clear it for you. If you don't have the tool...

I got a cheapo $17 one online to check for smog data readiness and to read and clear CEL codes. No good reason not to have at least one of those. I have a fancier dedicated unit but I can loan this out to friends and not give a damn what happens to it.

Sounds like a great excuse to get code checker. Either a standalone unit or a BT + Torque Pro. All sorts of nifty things you can do with the latter option.

Disconnect the negative terminal for an hour or overnight and the CEL will be cleared. VSC is beyond my ‘97 comprehension. Anyway, Bluetooth scanners are excellent.

It'll take about 3 seconds to clear the code...

Yep. The longer method however clears useful data that will need to be reacquired over time. Sometimes if helps for the system to relearn patterns, but i lost my cat readiness data a month ago and it still hasn't set the readiness flag and I have followed the drive patterns from Toyota a few times.

Pull the negative battery cable for a few minutes and it will reset, clearing the codes. (10mm)

I grabbed this el-cheapo special off Amazon $25 and it's a great addition to the `Yota tool box.

MOTOPOWER MP69033 Car OBD2 Scanner Code Reader Engine Fault Code Reader Scanner CAN Diagnostic Scan Tool for All OBD II Protocol Cars Since 1996, Yellow

Good luck!

Clearing CEL Light

I have a fancy laptop setup (old but works still) but I'll be honest, I like my blue driver a lot better. It's just so nice to just pull your iPhone out and clear code that way and see what's going on.

I think a blue driver dongle is like 100 bucks or something.

There's a manual procedure to clear codes if they have actually been resolved. Via DLC with jumper wire, enter diagnostic mode by jumping the proper pins and hit the brake 8 times within five seconds of turning ignition to on position.

Glad someone chimed in that knew the steps for THIS solution as I could not remember.

Thanks!

No problem make sure you confirm that I didn't miss a step. It's been awhile and my memory sucks. I believe the procedure is listed in the FSM. You won't need to get involved with the initialization and learning process with this method.
