Monitor Transmission Gear in Torque Pro
Hi All,
I am interested in monitoring what gear I'm in (for fun) in my '99 auto, and did some searching online to see if it could be done with Torque Pro. From what I can tell, you need to set up a custom PID file within Torque to have the option to monitor transmission gear.
I saw this post on a Silverado forum where a guy set up a program to monitor the gear in his truck.

Does anybody know enough about Torque/PID's who can help adapt this to our rigs? I bet there will be a good amount of interest.

Hi, actually you dont need any custom PID, trans temp sensor is shown in Torque app normally.
however keeping OBD adapter all the time to the ecu might not be a good idea unless quality brand.
if you're willing to permanently monitor trans temp i would highly recommend to have an external gauge.
in case you want to see which gear you are engaged to i don't think that ecu or trans computer supports it. i have no clue but its my best guess since they are old technology

Why do you say that?
My cheap elm327 reader has been plugged in for years with no issues

I am aware that Torque supports a trans temp gauge. I am asking about a PID to monitor which drive gear I am in.
I can't imagine that leaving a OBD dongle plugged in would damage anything.

Leaving an OBD Scanner plugged in will drain the battery as they don't turn off when the key is removed from the ignition. That's the only negative to leaving it plugged in all the time I am aware of.

its up to you, i would not risk mine.
what i know is cheap elms are cheap for a reason, can short circuit itself affecting ecu.

I leave my dongle in all the time for the last 7 years. The only time I take it out is when I'm going for a emissions test every 2 years. Still the same ECM. $12 dongle.
I have a 97, so no transmission info on my Torque app.

This is going to be a hard one as Toyota only used 2 signal wires to the shift solenoids to control 4 gears. There are 4 possible combinations that shift the gears:
ON - OFF
OFF - ON
ON - ON
OFF - OFF
I don't think there is a way to convert those combinations of signals into a PID to show on Torque Pro. Also, I don't keep my bluetooth reader plugged in either. It drains the battery to the point that by day 6-7 the battery is dead.

My cheap elm327 i've used for years has a On/Off Switch, yet I often leave it on, I doubt it even consumes any significant amount of current. And the cheap thing lets me move it among all my autos to keep up with them too. Please don't spread non-truths, Thanks.
