Ignition Switch Going Bad?

Hello,

Lot of different things out there and the symptoms list is a little vague on the internet so I was curious what you guys thought.

I just had this start today: put the key into the ignition, door chime sounded, turned to auxiliary, door chime turned off, no lights on the dash (not even door open light) rig wouldn't start.

I haven't had the issue of it starting and dying, or turning off randomly. Key still locks into place in auxiliary.

I have noticed I can pull the key out from any position on the shifter (auto). I leave it in reverse often and can pull the key. Two years ago, my parking brake switch was tweaked and wouldn't let me pull the key so iirc, I shouldn't be able to pull it out if I'm still in reverse either.

If I push the key into the cylinder a little further the lights all came back on and it was fine, but it took some fiddling to figure that out.

Y'all think it could be an ignition switch issue?

Check your battery terminals.

How many miles on the key? That extra push on key to work teeth could be worn. Mobile locksmiths everywhere VIN cut.
I've used Graphite powder in Ign switch old key new key, or clean and lube with Deoxit D5. Go from there.

I only had one back switch on a 3rd gen fail. The contacts were heavily warn. The cylinder lock itself is fine. My contacts were for the start position went. Swapped the connector out and solved my issue...

Update: I've gotten my battery tested. Despite being 5 years old, it's still good. Got the terminals cleaned, but I haven't put it back to test it all out.

My key is fairly new. I had a ton of copies made a few years ago as my OEM key broke at the key ring location.

Rig just passed 300k this month for miles

Could a starter relay be a possibility as well? After posting the initial post, the pushing the key method didn't work and I heard an odd clicking sound (no, I was not trying to start it, it was still in aux). The clicking sped up until it stopped entirely and the lights on the dash came on and it started first try. Super weird

At the age of these rigs. Yes it could be the starter relay.

Starter Relay not in picture until key turned to Ign pos. It worked. You had gremlins at Aux position, Ign switch be my bet.

I'm having a similar issue. Can you order a new ignition that fits your existing key? It would suck to have one key for ignition and another for doors.

maybe a locksmith can make your new cylinder take your old key.

Dang, forgot to provide update. Ended up simply being dirty terminals and possibly a frayed terminal ground. Dont forget to keep your terminals clean yall!
