Asking for Trouble with 37s?

I am on 35s now and need new tires. I probably wouldn't even think about it if places weren't clearing out Patagonia MTs to make room for the MT02, but they are. Found 37x12.50x17 Patagonia MTs on sale for $230 a piece which is cheaper than anything in 35 I have looked at.

I have Icon coilovers in the front, OME springs in the rear, and 1" body lift. I am clearing the 35s just fine.

Before I dive in, wanted to see if anyone could help me with a few questions.

I know that I will need to cut and tub to flex the 37s, but would I be alright street driving them until I can do that? The 4runner is a second vehicle, so I dont have to get it on the road asap. I do like to drive it to work a few times a week.

I have 4.88s now. Seems like 50/50 on here whether that is enough gearing. I can push the 35s well. Anyone running 37s with 4.88s have an opinion on drivability?

I am a pretty cautious driver, so when in doubt, I would rather use the winch than the skinny pedal. Still - am I going to be crushing cv axles on the reg?

Is this just a dumb idea?

Photo of 4runner in question.

Just curious, why don't you want MT02s? I've heard they blow the originals completely out of the water

Its not so much that I don't want them. Really havent even looked at them. Was just shocked to find a 37" MT under $250 and was wondering whether they would even be a possibility. Same size MT02s are over $300 a tire.

If you were going to even wheel it on anything marginally hard, I'd say 37s are a bad idea unless you're going to upgrade to a custom RCV (or similar) set up.

I am sure that you are right.

In any event, I think the moment has passed. Think my deal on the tires is gone anyway - all sold out. Probably for the best....

FWIW, my friend ran 40's on a 3rd gen with stock gears for a few months. It trashed the ring gear in the front diff, but the CV's held up just fine. The thing about having the larger tire/contact patch is that you can do the same obstacles easier. If you go dual cases, you will break LESS because your wheel speed will be lower. Wheel speed and hopping seems to be what ultimately breaks CV's or ring gears on these rigs.

It's a pretty stupid amount of work to clear 37's and ALMOST everyone who has hates their lives and goes back down. I wouldn't do it in the name of saving $120. About 10 fillups and you'll be breaking even. Then it's downhill from there. Sorry to be a bum, but just trying to save a brother lol

37's is entering monster truck zone. If you do put them on please post a video of you driving over the tops of cars and crushing them!

In all seriousness, every tire size up increases wear on moving driveline parts and suspension parts. Unless you plan on trailering the 4Runner like my neighbor does with his LS swap 4Runner with 37's I wouldn't do it unless you like repairing and replacing broken parts. I would guess with 35's you have already done this to some degree.

The main issue with 37s is that you lose a lot of up travel in your suspension when it cycles. If you are ok with that then extend the bump stops and send it. you will still probably rub but thats ok if you are ok with it
