That puts a side load on the steering rack, maybe steering rack bushings are worn? (sorry, didn't go back all the way to see if you have checked/upgraded those)

There's also the slip joint looseness that can cause clunks (tac weld or roll pin to fix), but that is most noticeable on dirt roads at speed, not often with low speed articulation.

Thanks, I actually haven't done anything with the steering yet at all. At 140K? It may be next.

I'm paying more attention to it, and think it's those situations, but also at the point of maximum extension, which perhaps tracks with my mechanics thoughts?

We'll see what my more knowledge specific guy has to add.

Appreciate the thoughts!

140k isn't a big deal, but that AND 25 years is... My rack made it over 270k miles - though it was mostly pavement and fire road miles.

Had the same clunk and it took me ages to find. I replaced everything back then including the steering rack. Drove me crazy. Until one day I decided to rock the truck -very- hard left-right by using the top of the driver door/door frame.

Finally it was the body mount to the frame. Just left of your left foot. You can see it under the carpet. The bolt and its hole were rusted and was kinda loose in its hole, moving the bushing a bit around.

I kinda torqued the bushing a bit more to stiffen it this side because I was too lazy to replace it and then tack-welded the bolt from the top so it can't move anymore then anti-rust it. Been nearly 10 years and still no clunk. Real deal would be to replace the bolt and ensuring it is stiff in its hole, replace the bushings also but maybe the hole is also oversized. I like the tack-weld option

Phatty, this girl is 98% on road in her life. I'm equipping her to do more exciting things, now. So it hasn't been an abusive 140K at all. And yeah, I get it, time creeps, even if the miles are low. Noted...

Driver, huh, interesting, mine does do it on both sides, same with yours? I'll do that test, see if I can recreate it. Thanks!
