funny but almost scary oopsie

I was doing my 2nd of three ATF drain/fill services yesterday and it coincided with my oil drain timing. I did both and when i was cleaning up i look at the worktable and see a new oil filter. Mind you I already topped off the oil and i thought "gah!" and quickly crouched down to put the filter on. Much to my surprise (and probably not to lifeline mechanics) oil I guess doesn't spill out of that hole like it does when draining. I expected to find a fountain of wasted new oil coming out but nothing. Whew! I laughed about it because in 10 yrs of working on my vehicles I've never done that.

And in my logbook I saw that the last time I did my ATF I just flushed the whole system using my wife to help cycle the pump on/off and I did 1 qt at a time into a bucket for the whole capacity. Why didn't I do that this time??

over the years with my CRV and then my 4runner I'd take something apart like a bumper or a grill or something and sometimes have an extra bolt. Never could find the hole for it and thought (oh well can't be that bad). Lighter car...fuel efficiency

I did one better.. I forgot to pull the drain plug and changed the filter. Was wondering why the oil was so full. Then it hit me... oh ..

I forgot to pull the drain plug. Sleep deprivation can be rough.

It happens, don't be too hard on yourself.

Just be glad you didn't have a double gasket oil filter. Every now and then the old gasket ring from the oil filter will stay on the block and won't get noticed, then a new filter is installed. The two gaskets don't seal when under pressure so it sprays engine oil out until you turn the engine off. Makes a huge mess!
