By properly clearance, you mean beating the shit out of the inner lower fender and cutting the flares if you've got them. Not smart.
Anyway, we can go round and round here but, some people just have to see for themselves and all the hot air from the peanut gallery won't change anything until experienced for one's self.

Sounds like you had a bad experience with your tires. Not all of us have had such a bad time. I didn't have much rubbing even with the stock UCAs and I only flattened the pinch weld.
But, as they say: Your Mileage May Vary.

I clear 33s with 2” of lift by running SPC uppers at E and beating the pinch weld flat. You can too, you just need the right parts.
To the OP: you can just about fit 32s with no lift. My opinion is to run as little lift as you can get away with and use adjustable UCAs to make room for the tires.

Metric 32's fit just fine with a 'max caster' alignment at stock height with stock arms (the lower arm adjustment for max caster moves the hub forward enough to clear). I did it with 265/70-17 KO2s for a while.
Any larger than that or with aggressive offsets, you'll need to modify the wheel wells at least a bit.
32's are the right place to be unless you really need to go larger.

245/75/17's. Almost 32's. pretty skinny, have plenty of clearance. Look a little small now with the lift (purchased pre lift)

I think I'll try the pizza-cutters next time. I have 4.30 gears, so maybe that will help a little bit with the MPGs....

Plus you can fit 255/85 with barely any clearance required. You don’t have to beat the shit out of your car and change upper control arms and do a bunch of supporting mods to make them work
The biggest drawback though is you’re only gonna find MT tires in that size which sucks and isn’t for everyone

Smart man. I thought about that size, but the limited brands and such were the deal breakers.

Well, beating a pinch weld is beating a pinch weld. I tried 16x10 -38 pro comp rock crawlers with the 285/75- for about 2 days. it looked cool but tried wheeling it and ripped off the lower portion of the front fender flare.
So, I went back to the other pro comps i've got. 16x8 0 offset.
Happy now.

Yeah that part really sucks because I’d love an AT tire in that size but I’m on track to get 50k miles out of my geolanders which is insane for a MT

This! I went from 265/70r17s, which looked a tad small with the lift I have, to 255/80/r17s Wildpeak AT3Ws and I had barely any issues with clearing them (literally just some light trimming of the plastic valence on my non fat lip bumper) and this is with wheel spacers and some stock 4th gen wheels so I'm pretty sure I'm not at 0 offset, and they barely impacted my gas milage. The biggest L is that there is a small but noticeable loss in power but I'm already driving a 5 speed so it wasn't that big a deal. I just have to downshift a little more in the mountains is the only practical consequence. And personally I think pizza cutters look great. They are certainly all around better tires for offroad and onroad.

I've considered going with 245/75R17's. Any complaints? They seem like a really narrow tire to me. Almost an inch narrower than factory 265/70R16 tires that most trims came with.

Bummer about the damaged flare. When I went to the wider 16x8 wheels, I had to trim the plastic at the front for that reason. I think mine have a -15 offset. No such issues with 285s and stock wheels. 285s are definitely more of a commitment to modifying the wheel wells. I sometimes wonder why I bothered. Oh yeah, so it would look cool. :-D
Glad you found your happy place.
I've had 285s for 20 years now. I sometimes wish I had 32s, mostly for the MPGs. But I want a true 32" and not the 31.6" that the 265/75/16 is. They didn't offer the 275/75/17 20 years ago. As I mentioned earlier, I have thought about going that way.
Maybe when my current set of Grabbers wear out, I'll think about it again and drop all the money on a new set of wheels and tires. The wheels are 19 years old and the finish is starting flake off.
Anyway, cheers!

No complaints. I got the "Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure with Kevlar" and have been happy with them. No punctures, wearing well (have about 20k miles on them). I live in the middle of the desert and anything rubber cracks quick, these still look pretty supple. If it werent for them looking a little undersized with my lift I'd buy them again. Havent checked for bigger sizes, but if they're available I'll probably re-buy these. Werent too expensive either, I think it was a little over $700 for 5 tires
