Victory Lap Starter Repair Kit -which did you use? ND-36SOL/ND-34SOL or plunger dia?
Did you use a Victory Lap Starter Rebuild Kit? Please share your motor, 5speed or auto, and which kit worked for you.
Or do you have a spare plunger handy to post dimensions (length, dia)?
The totyota rebuild kits are not expensive, but Amazon carries the Victory Lap Starter Rebuild Kits, ND-34SOL & ND-36SOL,
I thought this would be a good reference thread for starter repair using this kit.
They are also available at
ND-34SOL Nippondenso Solenoid Repair Kit | Cpidivisions
ND-36SOL Nippondenso Solenoid Repair Kit | Cpidivisions
They prefer you buy them direct.
The 5speed starter is 1.4kW & the auto starter is 1.8kW.
Searching for the correct part, I called cpidivisions, the manufacturer (or supplier) and was told after some uncertainty that the 34 is for 1.4kW starters and 36 is for 1.8kW, so I ordered the 36, I've a v6/auto here. Now I'm not so sure. I think it's more about matching the plunger dimensions, 34.8mm or 36.8mm diameter (named accordingly),
If you're measuring in inches, 34.8mm= 1-3/8", & 36.8mm=1-7.2/16, (just 1/16 bigger)
, and plunger length.
I have the 36 in hand, but the box does not list the 3.4l engine or the 2.7 engines. Kit appears to have all types of copper contacts, but I'd like to know if it's the correct plunger. This replacement is 36.8mm x 4-13/16" in length. I'm an hour from parts.
The pics below are of ND-36SOL
Thanks!

I have a 2000 Toyota 4Runner Limited 2WD 3.4L. automatic transmission, and used the kit ND-36SOL. ND-36SOL Nippondenso Solenoid Repair Kit – Cpidivisions only shows 4 contacts and it is missing the offset contact that is shown in the ND-34SOL picture, however if you order direct from CPI you will actually receive 6 different contacts. The kits on Amazon did not have the correct combination of plunger and offset contact. CPI is very responsive. I used their contact form on their website and they got back to me within 12 hours.
The ND-34 and ND-36 kits have differently sized solenoid plungers (disk and barrel diameter and length). I ended up pulling the starter twice, once to measure the plunger dimensions, and then again a week later to install the replacement kit.
As a stop-gap measure the first time, I sanded the face of the contacts flat with a belt sander, then used a propane torch to run a bead of solder on the back side. This gave the contacts enough thickness to contact the plunger disk. I probably could have gone another 5 to 7 years just doing that alone, but really didn't want to risk getting stranded somewhere.
Fortunately, the starter drops straight down and out on the 2WD model and it is an easy repair. I just slid under it and didn't even jack it up.
You will need a 36" socket extension and a 14mm wiggle head to get the top bolt out, like the youtube videos show. I would advise to hand tighen the starter bolts with a socket wheel, as a pain as that may be, you don't want to cross thread the bolt housing.
Here are my dimensions:
Plunger length: ~97mm
Contact Disk diameter: ~36.5mm
Denso Starter 22800-4083
Toyota Starter 28100-62030
One straight and one offset contact.

3rd gen 4runner 3.4 starter selenoid repair OEM Toyota Part numbers.
Just the shipping on the CPI site is INSANE $13.00
Instead just use the following parts from Toyota. The total is around $21+7ish shipping.
OEM Toyota part numbers are below.
Kit Repair Service
Part #28226-74070
Kit Repair Service
Part #28226-22050
Both 1.4 and 1.8 kilowatt starters have the same selenoid mechanism so same part numbers.
Separate part number for each side. Repaired 96 3.4 manual trans.

Starter Solenoid rebuild kits
Hey Ali - I liked your post. It helped me cut through some confusion.
I have a 98 4runner Limited. 3.4L 4WD Auto Trans
I want to replace the contacts in my Starter Solenoid and CPI wants $27+$14 to ship the ND-36OL kit
You mentioned a better deal ordering from Toyota.
My question is : what is the exact website for me to order from Toyota. Can you let me know please??
A second question: the two “sides”. Does the “motor side” actually get worn down too ?? Some guys have said they’ve only had to change out the “battery side” contacts. Or is it “do it while you’re in there”
Thanks Ali !! - Dave98

You'll want to use the parts ordering site of your local dealership if you want to pick it up in person and dodge the shipping costs. Otherwise I recommend using McGeorge Toyota here: Toyota Online Parts | Genuine Toyota Parts | Toyota Parts Online

Thanks for that. Fast Reply and good info.
My 98 3.4L Auto Trans 4WD has about 178K on the clock, so it’s about time for these contacts to be replaced though it seems quite a few ithers have gonemuch farther before needing them changed.
I was having the more-key-turns each day problem for 3-4 days until now it just wont start. Gonna check and clean and multimeter every wire connection and go from there. But I want to have the contacts right there when I do it.
Thanks again everyone!!

If you can get the Reman Denso from Napa, just go that route. By the time you pull the starter, and replace the contacts, you can have a totally rebuilt started with a warranty. I went though the whole starter contact replacement, but my issue was the Bearing in the bendix came apart and was causing the plunger to hang.
Good luck whatever you decide.

Yeah that sure sounds like it. Exactly what happened to me too around 210K miles. If it doesn't fix the issue see shadow247's recommendation above.

One side does wear more, but they all wear, as does the contact area on the plunger. If the starter is otherwise good, replace both contacts and the plunger...

Thanks to GameFreak, shadow and charlie
Absolutely the best advice and best way to go.
And repeat thanks for the fast replies.
I’ve joined Forums for every vehicle I ever drove, work or personal, and this is why.
I’m re-thinking the contacts vs reman Denso now.
Truck was always a strong starter. I could always just reach in the window and turn the key once and she would start right up quick .
Until this. Was hoping thats a sign of everything being good, just worn contacts

Generally three contacts to one set of brushes. However, greasing the bendix is important. It will stick out after engine starts and wear out starter gear.

Thanks phattyduck and 19963, 4lsr5
I think everyone’s advice has pushed me to just go for the Reman Denso starter.
Mainlly because right now Speed is the issue.
If I change the plunger and contacts and the Starter doesn’t work, then I’ve lost a day or so.
Right now speed trumps price. Usually I’m looking to save money going the DIY route, which is also more fun, we love our trucks and cars and working on them. Its also something that my Son and I enjoy doing together.
But right now its all about getting back on the road ASAP. Whatever way I go, Ill post the results.

I would love to strip down a reman Denso starter and alt to see just how far they go with rebuilding. Some only replace what was broken.

The factory starter in mine started getting stuck on at some point (when my Dad owned it, I think - I'd have to check the notes). I semi-recently replaced the contacts and plunger. Hard to say if they did brushes or bearings since the 'new' Denso reman that was on there had something like 100k miles on it.

When I bought my 97 project it came with a 80a CarQuest reman that was only 4 months old. When my Ex’s “Puppy Hauler” (its own thread here) lost a diode in the bridge I slapped on the CarQuest reman.
Needless to say, two years (ish) later it stopped charging until I whacked it with a hammer.
Opened it up to replace the brushes and they barely stuck out of the holder they were that worn down. Put a Toyota brush assembly in it and it’s now a spare. So, either they fixed something else and put it in the shelf or they used a really soft set of brushes.
