97 3.4 sounds like a whined up car

Hi

My 4runner was sitting for about 2 weeks it's been cold but not to cold. When I went to start it , it now has this whine noise like a whined up car or air plane. I attached a link to the sound.

Any thoughts what it could be?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the power steering system to me. Is the steering stiff or notchy when turned? Does the sound go away when the truck is warmed up? When was the last time a flush and screen cleaning was done?

The sound stays on from start up it does not go away when warmed up at all. It gets louder as I increase rpms. The steering feels fine. Ps fluid looks good.
I did drive thru a big puddle of mud last time I drove it before it was sitting. Not sure if mud got in somewhere

I had a rectifier in the alt go bad and it whined like a starving power steering pump.

But, the bad rectifier was obvious. My system voltage dropped with any extra load. However, it was loud.

I'd suggest giving the belt system a once-over. Mud from that puddle might be messing with it. Check the belts for any slipping or wear.

Also, that noise could be coming from the alternator or one of the pulleys. Pop the hood, let the engine run, and use a mechanic's stethoscope or a long screwdriver to narrow down where it's coming from. Just be careful and listen through the handle against different components.

If the noise keeps bugging you, take a look at the water pump and idler pulleys too.

Just wanted to update this. It ended being the alternator!!
Thank you guys for the guidance. Swap it out for a junkyard oem and the sound is gone!!

Thanks guys!

Interesting! It sounded a lot like mine does and I was about to ask if it happens in N and Park. Mine doesn't and I suspect the transmission.

Mine did it no matter what gear I was in. If the engine was running that noise would be apparent. Also it did not get louder as I Reved it up. It stood the same no matter what
