2001 Alarm system issues (no, really?!?)
Yeah, I know. Anyway, 2001 SR5. Undetermined alarm system, but here's what I do know about it:
1) key fob HYQ1512Y
2) red led next to trac off switch
3) valet button on panel below driver J/B/fuse box
4) alarm control box "United States Auto Security"
5) white connector behind steering column says "CH03-7" and "'96-'98 4Runner" (this is the wiring harness that intercepts and reroutes various wires to the alarm box in 4) above)
Symptoms:
Random triggering of alarm, mostly in the middle of the night. Seems to happen more often with humidity. Random locking/unlocking of all doors at once.
When I acquired the vehicle a few years back, prior owner alerted me to this unresolved issue, and said that it mostly happens when the alarm is armed by either the remote or by locking the doors using the drivers control switch. So, use the key to manually lock/unlock car. This minimized the alarm triggers, except for as stated above.
The wiring looked crazy, with all kinds of T-taps and fuses everywhere, which at first I thought must be the issue, but I've seen others on this forum that look similar. I'm guessing it was OEM dealer installed, but unsure.
After finally taking some time to try to understand what's going on, I just disconnected the alarm box. The car started fine, but then I got concerned that it may only do so for a limited number. So then I disconnected the wiring harness and restored the original connection, so finally, I don't need to worry about the alarm going off! BUT.... now I also lost the door lock function, which isn't *that* big a deal, but since I'm figuring it out, why not go all the way?
So that's now my goal: to either 1) figure out why it was malfunctioning and correct it (hood latch courtesy sensor is a candidate) so I can have everything functional, including the key fob; or 2) remove it completely from the system and recover the functions I've lost by just partially removing it (mainly auto door locks and key fob, but maybe others?).
So, any suggestions/advice? Any thoughts on the "CH03-7" wiring harness that specifies it for the 96-98, but is installed in a 2001? Could this be an issue?
And if I opt for total removal, how do I remove the taps and fuses? Just pull them off, or must I cut and splice wires?
I know there are plenty of you 3rd geners who have dealt with this, one way or another, and I'd like to hear from you, especially if you successfully tracked down the faulty component.
Cheers!
