Rear Passenger Wheel Rust Advise

Hello All,
I have a 3rd gen with rust in the rear passenger side. Not sure where it is coming from. Looking for some feedback on whether or not this can be cut out or if I should just put some POR 15 for Eastwood rust converter on it and call it a day. The truck is in very good condition outside of this so would like to get it fixed but I am finding that most body shops will not work on rust due to concerns about it coming back. Appreciate any feedback on options. Thank you

Probably clean it up and see how far it goes. If it's not bad and you don't want to fix it, then use por15 or Eastwood. If it's bad, fix it for sure.

Any ideas as to where the rust is coming from? This does not appear to be a common rust area.

That's a pinhole in the inner fender seam seal and undercoating. I had this happen on an otherwise completely rust free (California) '89 Camry. Like, literally no rust anywhere else.

Step 1 is to make sure you stop water getting in there again, which requires work in the wheel well. Once that'd done, you can decide what to do with the inside...

How aggressive you go will depend on your environment. If you are in the desert, I'd say wire wheel and re-seal/coat the wheel well and rust convert the inside. If you are in the salt belt, you'll need to go much farther to keep the cancer from spreading.

Thanks very much for the info, that makes sense. I have not seen an issue like this before. I am in the rust belt so expect I have my work cut out for me finding a body shop that will look at this.

I have found a body shop that will cut out the rust in the rear wheel well. They will weld in replacement metal and fiberglass and cover over with undercoating.

While I had the trim pieces out I put a endoscope into the holes to examine the inside of the rockers. They had moderate rust from the rear up to the front. The worst is in the back by the rear wheels which I know is a common area to rust. The metal on the outside is solid and there is no bubbling.

I sprayed Eastwoods Rust encapsulator into the holes and coated the rust in the rockers. I also plan on filling it with fluid film. I know this won't stop the rust completely but hopefully will really slow it down.

Is there anything else I can do to keep the rust from spreading in this area? Thanks

Is there anything else you can do to stop rust from spreading? Good question. Stop driving the car and store it. Move out of the RUST belt.

Sorry I haven't be online the forum for a while. I would use evaporust jelly to get to all cleaned up. Once the metal is really clean. It will need epoxy paint to reseal it and keep an eye on it.

The fender wells are rough areas and will rust out. If its super rough.. You can use fiberglass resin to smooth it up and will help keep the water out. If it gets super full of holes. Its best to replace the steel and epoxy or weld new panel in.
