Hmm nice looking base unit.
I would recommend taking a large piece of cardboard (to lay on) and a long pokey screwdriver (for poking at the usual rust points to make sure screwdriver doesn't go thru). The rear trailing arms are very prone.
I have to say I find the Extra nice looking frame Suspect. None are that clean without a Reason. Dig deep into that - hopefully just my feeling and nothing real. After all $9 grand is still a chunk. Luck deciding.

@ jgue467
thank you. i think the clean frme and mileage and overall condition play into the $9k chunk! they dont know the timing belt, waterpump status so i instantly dropped them from 12.5 to 9k and he bit. i will look at underside and poke around, rear trailing arms are very rear of frame to rear bumper? i heard next to gas tank as well on the inside frame. but otherwise, i feel like in the northeast this is a decent prospect and something i should look at...

obviously he just rattle canned the underside. in picture 11 the rear trailing arms are the triangle looking frame parts in front of rear tires that the rods and axle attach too, those are very prone rust problems in the rust belt and can be $$ to deal with.
in picture 12 you can see the fuel filter, see how rusty it is, thats what that frame looked like a few days ago I bet

i mentioned that to him (but then again, thats what we do, clean areas or contain them with spray paint or other products) but he claimed that wasnt frame it was grill or bumper work lol
im going to look at fuel filter area you mentioned
i looked, the trailing arms look solid in the photo, all the bolts look decent i noticed. i am convinced this thing looks pretty good for up here despite some of the comments...i wonder if i should tell him no unless you can do $7,000
i wonder if a lot of people dont know how rusty vehicles get up here, but i am on the fence on this or even finding one of thesse worthy up here. a guy goes to nc brings them up and sells them for $10,000-$15,000 and they have 250,000 miles i noticed

If he told you he didn't paint the frame I'm of the opinion he's lying, in at least 4 or 5 of the photos you can clearly see spray cans of black paint!!

I agree with the other posters that the frame has been painted. Doesn't mean that it's bad as it could have been surface rust that was sanded and painted to preserve it. That fuel filter has probably been there since the truck was new so 20+ years of exposure will do that. Best bet is to gently tap the frame with a hammer at those places known for rust. If there's a ping it's OK, if a thud, stay away.

Have you considered looking in the Southwest for a $7000 rig and spending the rest on travel? I know that might not be possible, but we don't spend that much on rigs with a coat of Rustoleum out here...
P.S. I can't see the FB pictures so I'm talking out my ass a bit here but...

There's lots of visible rust all over that thing, even if it is covered by a black coating - might be paint, might be black oil coating (check the roughness on the spare tire, transfer skid, every frame weld, etc.). That might be "New England Clean" but that is really still a rust bucket.

I was looking at FB Marketplace yesterday actually and saw this 4Runner. I looked at the pics and immediately said that thing has been covered with undercoating or spray paint to hide all the rust. I live in CT. so I know what to look for especially with my 2002. I wouldn't pay $7k for that thing. I probably wouldn't buy it period because it looks like a problem child.
