Question for those who have rebuilt front brake calipers

Was the hassle and labor worth it, saving a bunch, instead of buying new OEM ones and just simply replacing them? OEM seal kits and even pistons are pretty cheap.

With 216K, I just had to replace my pads and rotors, which were badly worn. I had put probably 100K on those rotors. The outer piston boots on my calipers have pretty much disintegrated, so I expect that either a piston will seize or a leak will develop, at some point in the foreseeable future. It has lived its entire 25 year life in FL and GA, and I doubt it has ever been up in the Salt Belt, so underside corrosion has never been an issue at all.

I really don't want to put aftermarkets on a critical part. I watched Timmy's video on doing the job, and I have the tools and abilities to do the job, from what I can tell.

If the pistons are in good shape and the seals are replaced with new OEM ones, isn't the finished product just about as good as a brand new one?

But, maybe I get it all apart and discover that I need 8 new pistons, too. Then, the price starts going way up, and with the labor, might not be worth the smaller (then) savings.

I will wait until either my brake light comes on, or I notice a leak, before I do the job, but I wanted to already have a plan in mind.

Just looking for real world personal experiences from people here. Do you regret rebuilding front calipers, instead of just replacing them?

The suckiest part of the job will be replacing the fluid and bleeding them.

100% worth it. I rebuilt my tundra calipers before I put them on my 4runner using all oem seals. It's pretty easy to do too. Just plug the brake line after you take it off.

It’s not a hard job. Totally worth it. Odds are your pistons will be just fine. I followed Timmy’s video and it was easy.

I will also echo it's worth it and not a hard job. I did a caliper rebuild on a buddy's FZJ80 Land Cruiser and made a video for it.

with my first 4runner i lived in oregon and used parts were easy to come by, so when I did the tundra brake upgrade i went used calipers, put new seals in and no issues.
however now this current 4runner and location, it was much easier to just get NAPA rebuilt tundra calipers than chase down used calipers

so if you have the time and space and clean used calipers are easy to get I would rebuild. if time and availability as issue go with rebuilt

btw , im on year 3 of the napa rebuilts and oem pads and rotors (13wl upgrade)

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. It looks like I will do the rebuild job if/when a caliper starts leaking. I put only maybe 2k miles on mine per year now, so these calipers may last a while.

One other question: What is the common rule of thumb nowadays on breaking in new pads/rotors? Just regular driving, or should I do some hard stops along with cooling cycles initially?
