3rd gen 2.7L P/S - leaking fluid form cap - alot
Hi,
Have a 1999 runner, base model 2.7L 315k miles. Everything is original except some vac hoses.
Power steering fluid is leaking quite a bit from cap. From top down sides of reservoir.
What is nuts is that reservoir level of fluid is where it should be on dip stick/cap indicator.
Zero noise coming from pump - engine bay components are in good shape.
No power assist on steering i.e. have to old school muscle steer turns
No leaks on pressure line, return line or the steering rack. Dry as can be.
everything indicates source coming from cap gasket.
My plan is:
1) Remove original pump
2) install inexpensive unit (4runner buddy has one i can use) and check if power assist is working and if leak stops.
3) On original unit- remove reservoir, inspect screen, inspect / replace cap-gasket
4) Gioven OEM pump, what parts typically need to be replaceed for a OEM style rebuild.
If I tear down pump can I get parts if needed ?
I know you can get a Napa pump for <$300 with a reservoir but prefer to keep OEM units if rebuild kits or parts are available.
I see OEM kits sold from Japan merchants on eBay.
What other parts besides gaskets should be inspected rebuilt?...
Vane, bearings, pressure spring ...
I checked YoshiParts and saw most parts seem available but what really needs to be replaced?
If JOBBERS ie Cardone do a rebuild on a Toyota OEM unit what are they replacing?
