Fan Clutch Question

Does the fan clutch have a bearing on back side where it connects to the fan bracket? My fan clutch was making a random screeching sound and was pretty consistent around 2k. When troubling shooting the noise, I sprayed the back part the fan clutch where it connects to the fan bracket with WD40 and the noise went away. Been a day and noise still hasnt shown up, but I sure it will reappear again. I bought a new fan clutch as mine has 327k on it. Besides the noise it appears to be functioning correctly. No rise in temps or anything. Im just curious as to what in FC could be causing the noise is all. If anyone has any insight, Id like to know.

Thanks

MikeM

IIRC, there is a shaft on the rear of the clutch, with a bearing, that connects it to the mount. So if it quieted down, I'd say that bearing is going bad. Definately replace the clutch now before it seizes up.

Does that answer your question?

The bearing is part of the bracket (aka 'fake water pump) that the fan clutch bolts up to. It is not part of the fan clutch. This is not to say that the clutch itself could not make a noise when it is free-wheeling, or in the process of locking up. If the noise is when the clutch is locked up and fan is blowing full blast (will shred a newspaper stuck into the blades), then the problem is the fake water pump bearing. If original, it's due for a change (p/n 16307-62011).

Mine is original with over 200k miles on it and still going strong, but it won't last forever. Fan clutch has been changed years ago.
