edit: changed title after learning 4.56 carrier is different
looking to buy a rear with 4.56 gears. where should I look? there are not a lot of junk yards near me. I looked on ebay and didnt see any. I do not need complete rear, just diff/gears unit. also, what years interchange? only 98-02?
any good places to source? or anyone have one for sale? whats the going rate?

'96-'02 are compatible, but the 4-cylinder (and thus 4.56's) are only '96-'00.
Try Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market to search junkyards. Definitely check carefully ring and pinion teeth before purchase - the 4.56 is pretty rare (uses a different carrier than all the other ratios, FYI)

uses a different carrier?? damn.
so the 3.9 and 4.1 same.
4.3 are locking and different
4.56 different from both above?
I was going 4.56 before, because I thought it was a drop in. What would be the cheapest option to get 4.3 or higher?

You can order that differential from East Coast Gear Supply. When it arrives, you pull yours, put it in the box the rebuilt one came in, and ship it back to ECGS to satisfy the core charge. Easy Peasy.

All the available factory gear ratios will bolt in place (non-e-locker) of each other. The only issue with the factory 4.56 carrier is that no aftermarket gears work on them.
Tim has a good suggestion - just re-gear and send your current 3rd member back to ECGS... Then you aren't stuck with 4.56 as your 'best' option - maybe 4.88's would be better for you?

Whats the most cost effective route to get 4.3-4.8 gearing?
A complete 4.56 third member will drop in. Just the gears of an OEM 4.56 will not fit/work on your diff/carrier - is that more clear?
Cheapest? Find a crashed 4Runner with the right gears, buy it and part it out. Make some $$$ that way...
Start calling junk yards... (see the link I provided above) You might find they want $400 for a 200k+ mile used diff, and suddenly $800-1000 to ECGS for a fully rebuilt diff sounds reasonable... (then you start to contemplate an LSD/locker, etc...) - or you might find something for $150 and it will be no problem.
