Owners Manual

Hi there! I'm a very excited owner of a 97 Limited, but with great power comes great responsibilities. Unfortunately, the previous owner did not have the owner's manual, among a list of other stuff, so I would like to know if there is a source to be able to download manuals or read up on it.

One particular subject I would like to know about is engaging the 4 wheel drive. I don't want to mess anything up. There is nothing printed in the vehicle either, so what's the proper procedure.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings.

I dont know of any downloadable owners manuals.

Engaging 4wd is easy. I will assume you have never had a 4wd before.
Normal driving is 2wd, (rear wheel drive). To engage 4wd, simply push the button on the transfer case shifter. This can be done whilst you are stopped or even if you are moving. When shifting whilst moving, drive as straight as possible and keep speed under 60 mph. The front wheels now are also driving and the little green light on the dash should illuminate.
Only use 4wd when on slippery surfaces like dirt, gravel, mud, snow, ice etc.... Avoid using 4wd on pavement even if it is wet. Using 4wd on high traction surfaces can cause damage to the drivetrain components.
To engage 4wd low-range (4lo) the vehicle MUST be stationary and in 4wd. Shift the transmission to neutral, then shift the transfer case lever to 4lo. Select the drive gear you want and off you go. Low range will half your speed and double the engine torque. Use low range for steep hills, traversing very rough or uneven terrain, deep snow, deep mud, or any other time you feel the engine is not giving you the 'power' you need or you are going to fast for the conditions.
Going back to 2wd for normal driving is simply the opposite procedure.
You will find many threads on this forum about all this, so have a look around, use the search feature, and I'm sure you will have all your questions answered.

Thanks Techno. The link didn't work, but I assume you were referring to a used owner's manual on e-bay. I checked there, but thought that there might be a free resource online.

I previously had a full time 4x4, so operating a part-time 4x4 is new to me. I heard exactly what you mentioned, but since things vary from manufacture to manufacture and model to model, I wanted to be sure.

Thanks again.
