Glove Box Light

Does anyone else have a problem of the replacement #74 from Sylvania not fitting the socket in the glove box? I measured the original (burned out) bulb and the #74 from the Advance Auto Parts, and the #74 is a tad too thick in circumference, making it not fit into the socket. Was that just a bad batch? Is there another bulb that fits?

Thanks in advance.

i would just go to the dealer and get the light, its like 3$ and you know it will fit, thats what i did when i had to replace mine a couple months ago...

its also just kinda hard to get the old one out and the new one in unless your fingers are REALLY tiny

use some needle nose pliers with tape on the ends. Don't squeeze too tight.

Question 98 4runner non standard # 74 bulbs

Hey, just tried to replace both the glove compartment and ash tray #74 bulbs with sylvania "long life" #74 bulb in my 98 4runner. These bulbs are wider than the factory bulbs and do not seat fully into the bulb socket!!!
I was able to get the glove box bulb to make contact, and it lit, but was so loose that it fell out when the socket was turned upside down, which is the installed configuration.so there is power going to the bulb socket. So now i will try to return these and see if any other make will fit, but i assume i will have to go to a toyota dealer for these!
What ever happened to industry standards?

ALSO,TO REMOVE THE FACTORY BULBS, I USED A TWEEZER AND PAPER TOWEL!

@DAVE123 , the 2721 bulb fits perfect same size as OE.

[i]hi 96redrunner, thanks for the suggestion!
Well i returned the #74 bulbs and tried the 2721 in the glovebox socket that i took in with me. They actually fit in the socket, but when i reconnected the socket, the bulb wouldn't stay lit! This was because there was to much play in the socket so the bulb could wiggle around to much, breaking the connection. Luckily, i was in the auto store's parking lot, and i hadn't purchased these yet.
Said adios and went to a toyota dealer which gave me their #74 bulbs which fit correctly! Also fit nicely in the ash tray socket too.
So much for "industry standards", or does this give credence to the adage of "keeping your toyota, a toyota? Or more realistically is this a prime example of "planned obsolescence"????

If you were to measure the bulbs with digital dial caliper you'll find the 74's are bigger than what toyota uses I'm talking auto parts store 74's. I did this wanting to get away from paying dealer prices, toyota uses a T 1 1/2 bulb 74's are a T 1 3/4 bulb. Forcing a 74 into socket has screwed up sockets for me why I use 2721's now. Bulbtown 2721's are like $.65 each buy them buy the 10 pack.

You need the “E74” bulbs, not regular 74.
