Removing roof rack '98

Anyone have experience removing the sliding bars and related hardware? I want to leave the tracks in place in order to connect a custom rack which will use the sliding nuts as connected to the factory bars. The protective bars remove easily but the 2 raised bars are the problem. Any help is appreciated!

to remove the sliding rails, at least on my 2001 you are going to have to buy a special star shaped screw driver to pop off the front part of the rack and then you should be able to slide the rails off i am not sure of the name of the tool but i found one in my garage

I saw the torx bolt and thought it might be the key to getting it apart. Just did not want to start yanking parts but I'll check it out... Thanks!
