oil

I have a 96 4runner with 180,000+ miles on it. I was wondering if its worth switching from the recommended 5w30 oil to royal purple at such high mileage?

At this point I don't think I would bother I say just change it often ........... You could run some Auto Rx threw it to make sure it's running cleen though.

When my 4Runner hit 100k, I started using the Valvoline Max Life when I had my oil changed. I've now switched to the Max Life full synthetic -- considering the cost of the oil to be preventive medicine with the hopes I'll see 250k on the odometer!

I definetly wouldn't run Royal Purple in that higher of a mileage engien but a maybe Max Life stuff would be good or just a cheaper synthetic. IMO RP is overkill on most stock vehicles since the difference isn't realized til your actually laying down real horsepower and really stressing the motor.

When it comes to dino oil, really, I personally don't see any reason to spend more on "Max Life" "15000 mile" or whatever oil. Sure there may be additives that may help, but the key is to change it out regularly. I have yet to see a car that has had issues related to oil that has had its oil changed at regular intervals. My Civic has 186.5 miles and still running strong. Dino oil its entire life.

My advice is to keep it changed, whatever you use. I use Quaker State, Valvoline, Pennzoil or whatever happens to be on sale at that time. I change it at every 4-5k miles.
