headlight bulbs burning out......

so i ran a set of sylvania bulbs in my rig, and loved em, but they burnt out after about 7 months........

i was about to buy a set of piaas, but the guy at central 4wd told me that "if its going into a yota they will just burn out on you"

from what ive been hearing, the drl ruin good bulbs because they run the bulb at 50% power, and from what ive been told its illegal to disengage the drl system in California.

so any suggestions?

Your not going to get pulled over for not havinfg DRL's, not all cars come with DRL's anyways. So go ahead and disable it.

From what I can tell there isn't anything in the CA vehicle code preventing you from disabling (and/or requiring) the running lights. But take a look for yourself (I am certainly no lawyer):

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/vc/vc.htm

I am sure at some point the state will mandate it be standard on all vehicles once there are enough statistics to make it required on models 20XX and up.

As far as lights burning out...sounds more like you have some sort of electrical issue

Having the DRLs probably does shorten the life of the bulbs, but other owners haven't complained about it.

socal drl's

i used to live in san diego and had my drls disabled. i never had any trouble. i finally disabled them because they were burning through a set of bulbs per year. now with no drls i'm on year 2 with the current sylvanias.

nope, everything is stock under the hood electrical wise, aside from adding a set of fog lights, but that was after the first set burnt out.

i had talked to another buddy to see if he had the same problem, and he said that in his mother in laws corolla, they had gone through 3 sets of piaa's, before going back to a factory bulb.

yes i do leave the headlights on sometimes for a forced startup, but not that often.

from what i found out, since the drl's run at 50% power, that shortage of power putts alot of wear and tear on the bulbs. if anyone can explain why, that would be awesome

and i was told that its illegal to disable the drl from a car stereo shop, but will the dealer still do it for me? i hate not being able to sneak up on people at night

You can disable the DRLs. There was just a question asked about this about five threads down. There is a link in there for a write up.

Starting your truck with the lights on isn't good since you get a voltage surge and the Silverstars seem sensitive to this upon repeated times doing so and it's a good idea to make sure the lights are off.
